I have a 3 day old chick at the moment in the nest box, it is wriggling and getting more vocal and it seems the parents are doing well considering it`s there first time breeding. I saw earlier today the chick had black colour in its crop Oswell as mums milk, is this something to worry about? I assumed it might be Dad feeding it seed, as he has been very good. I'm just worried that it may be a bad thing at this age and wouldn't want anything to go wrong with the chick as my hen had a clutch of 4 eggs and only 1 egg was fertile. I have no other worries as yet, I might just be worrying over nothing as I'm inexperienced. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to forum Seeds in chick's crop is an indication that hen is unable to make enough crop milk. Can you post the picture of the crop?

That's not something very serious if it's just a few seeds.

Are you providing your pair with something other than seeds, like some soft food?

Seeds in chick's crop is always a sign that a hen is unable to make enough crop milk. This can also happen if all she has is seed and water. Crop pictures can tell a lot of things and I have seen pictures showing seeds

Couldn't hurt to take a picture and show us anyway. Besides, we love pictures of babies!
