I have had my little fish for only about a year and a half and sadly he has been very ill recently. I have tried every thing to help him from aquarium salt, melafix and finally ab for internal parasites and worms...A few weeks ago he seemed to pick up a bit but over the past few days has taken a turn for the worst. It is SO sad to see him at the bottom of the tank as he was such a punchy fella,he was boss so i think i will have to stop his suffering..I will have to put him on some ice and in the freezer so he slips away without any pain.. Here a couple of videos when i got him as a wee baby and grown up..

That's sad Moogie, im sorry. You were very lucky to have him for all that time, ive had three and they have only lived from a week through to a few weeks, just cant keep them, the rest of the tank was fine and we rarely lost any of the other fish but the fighters were difficult. but sooo beautiful.

Thanks Guys xxxx I know most people would say "its only a fish" but Norman (and most fighting fish) have unique personality's which really make them lovely pets...I could call his name and he would come right over to see me even when he started of with his back to me Any way, he is now at rest and although that was so hard to put him to sleep i know it was the best thing for him,he went to sleep as soon as i added the clove oil...We are going to bury him in one of my potted plants and call the plant Norman....I know I'm a bit crazy but he was part of my life x im just a soppy old mare really!!

Your not a soppy old mare Moogie, ive cried about every pet ive ever lost, fish fir or feather. This is my third house in 36 years of marriage and my biggest worry about leaving the other two was leaving all the pets that were buried in the garden's

You and me both, my mum says I'm the wrong person to have pets. Every dog I've lost i say, that's it no more, i cant stand the grief BUT the longest time I've been able to go without one is 8 months that was the time before Tilly, i lost two within a year of each other and it left me bereft, i was adamant NO MORE, then along came Tilly, i don't think i could live without a dog in my life i don't feel whole somehow. Ive always had budgie's as well amongst many other things. We are just that type we have to have the little things in our lives and why not, as you say you have to tell yourself that they have the best while they are with you and love them while you've got them, and to know when it's time to let them go a price we have to pay.

It's sad that people say "it's just a fish". They become part of our lives and our pets bring so much joy to us. Why shouldn't they be treated with kindness and respect? I know it's hard but it takes real heart to let them go when they're suffering. Hope you're ok x

So sorry, Moogie. I am sure you did the right thing putting him to sleep. RIP Norman. And the plant will love him too! His tank was lovely, by the way. We had a female for quite some time - lived about twice the amount of time she was supposed to - and did that in a huge old coffee bottle. After she died we had a couple of males in quick succession but a holiday would come along, we would entrust said fish to someone and dead fish in a couple of days. Gave up after the third. It is always difficult when a life you have been sharing with passes. Pets are just tooooo special.

Poor Norman. His videos were lovely. You keep as good a tank as you do your cage.
I'm a terrible sook when it comes to animals, too. I thought I would get better with losing pets as I got older, but sadly, no.
