Hello, I have a octagonal 10X10 foot (3X3 m) metal aviary- I would appreciate any ideas about a shelter which would protect my budgies from the cold and rain that I could build inside my aviary. I live in North Carolina so the winters can be below freezing for up to a month in the winter. I could heat it with a lamp if needed. Right now I have to move by birds to a smaller aviary that I cover up in the winter during the nights. Thanks! I take in unwanted parakeets and cockatiels, so I am not interested in breeding. I usually have about 25 birds but would get more if I could keep them in this aviary all year. Thanks in advance.

They would need light to encourage them in , a tubular heater to maintain 10 c in winter, fed in side the shelter only, perches higher inside than outside

Hi and welcome to forum Most budgie breeders/owners have inside and outside flights. What I can understand from your post that you have an outside aviary. In this situation you can split it to cover and insulate the half area and leave the rest half open. Thus the birds will go inside during nights as Barrie mentioned. You can also add a small wooden insulated aviary/flight to the one side of your current aviary so the birds can use it during cold nights. As they would use it for sleeping only, you don't need to make a bigger one. Any pictures of your current aviary would help in understanding the current situation.

Thanks to both of you. The idea about only feeding them in the enclosed area and keeping the perches higher should be helpful. I am hoping I have supplied a picture of my aviary to see if this helps with any other helpful suggestions. The aviary it is pretty awkward and if I could do it again I would never have gotten one this shape or height. Actually this is an old picture, I now have a safety enclosure and have managed to cover part of the top with tarp. Attachments:
