We went to our local Jollyes pet food shop today and noticed something regarding the Budgie seed they sell and just wondered if someone could explain please. They always have a few different types of Budgie seed ie. Budgie breeder, Budgie Tonic, Budgie number 1 and 2 etc etc...we have never read what was in Budgie number 1 or 2 before but today we happened to look at the ingredients on the sacks and in Budgie number 1 it said "Red Millet, Yellow Millet, Canary Seed and Vegetable Oil"...In Budgie number 2 it had the same as above but without the Vegetable oil...my first question is why give Budgies vegetable oil, it causes all sorts of problems in humans regarding clogged arteries etc so why give it to Budgies and second question is do they really need it and why make one seed with and one without. Thanks x

Hi You missed one thing about seed. Mixed seed is subject
to VAT. Plain seed is VAT free. So mix your own.
OIL...Because many bird keepers are a gullible lot. Present
company accepted. & are quite willing to pay extra for any
fancy mix of anything good bad or indifferent. A basic seed
mix of millet & canary, along with a good wholesome diet
of Fruit/Veg , Egg etc. Yours B.J.

I haven't heard of vegetable oil use for budgies. However breeders soak their seeds in Wheat Gram oil and Cod Liver oil for breeding budgies.

Vegetable oil isn't the cause of clogged arteries. Animal fats (saturated fats) are the problem with humans and their fatty arteries. Vege oils (unsaturated fats) are the good oils. The exception being vege oils that have been made to solidify at room temp artificially - trans-fats.

A good seed mix is 50% plain canary, 50% mixed millets , i would never buy seed with added oil, oil goes rancid.....on my build up to the breeding season each pair receives seed mixed with wheat germ oil for three days each week , in hot weather any remaining soaked seeds would be removed daily and discarded.
I also use a budgie tonic seed as an added extra, johnson and Jeff supply a husk free wild bird seed and fruit mix, my birds eat every single piece as another added extra.
Don't forget the dried mealworms, supply wet and your birds will appreciate the extra protein.
