Hi,
So as some of you may or may not know, I started off with 2 budgies last year: Banana and Mango. A couple days later I thought they looked so small in the big cage and bought Angel. Unfortunately Banana and Mango started picking on baby Angel, so I figured he needed his own partner in crime and so I got Sunny. Mind you, both Banana and Mango were babies themselves too..about 4 months old at the time, Angel was only about 2-3 months old. Not much difference but they wouldn't let Angel eat or perch beside them or just randomly peck at him.(by "they" I mean Banana-cheeky bossy little hen hehehe)
Meet L-R: Mango, Angel, Sunny and Banana. The little birdie in the back? That's my brother.
Above picture there are 4 budgies-it just looks like Banana is super chubby because Mango is behind her lol.
From the very first day we got Sunny, him and Angel were inseparable. At first Mango and Banana tried pecking at Sunny and tried to show dominance..well let me tell you that that very first encounter is one I will never ever forget. I introduced Sunny with Angel first on the couch-a neutral place. Angel immediately began chirping happily and Sunny literally ran towards him. It was like long lost best friends being reunited. They immediately bonded. So cute. Then I introduced Banana and Sunny, poor Sunny tried to get close to Banana, but she just ignored him and got mad at him. Then with Mango and Sunny, Mango made himself appear bigger and aah aah'd at Sunny. Mango tried asserting his dominance over Sunny and tried pecking at him-well Angel wasn't going to have any of that! No sirree bob! He put himself between Mango and Sunny and took those pecks like a tough little boxer and pecked back! Any time that Mango or Banana even trilled or aah aah'd at Sunny, Angel was right there in between defending Sunny. Still makes me cry at the sweet memories to this day.
First day true love began:
Anywhere that Sunny went, Angel always followed.
Unfortunately my beautiful sweet little Sunny was only with us for a few months. I never did find out if Sunny was a female or male. I always thought of Sunny as male, but I don't really know. I remember the first day we got Sunny. I was still very very new at owning budgies and where to buy them and who to buy them from etc etc. I got him at the pet store. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I spent a very very long time looking at the budgies in the pet store. I tried to see how they all acted towards each other and general health-not that I knew much anyway. (Only bright eyes, plummage, no missing toes, clean vent and nares.) I fell in love with Sunny's beautiful bright feathers. They were so clean and so healthy looking! We took him home with us in the small box the store provided-I forgot the small carry on cage in all my excitement. On our way home, we stopped by a store and I stayed behind in the car, admiring and cooing over Sunny and trying to bond with him. From that day on, I sang to him "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when sky's are grey, you'll never know dear how much I love you, so pleas don't take my sunshine away" Because he was the only yellow one, the song fit perfectly. He escaped from my hands and ran underneath the gearbox in the car. I panicked. My heart beat so fast, I felt it getting ready to leap out of my chest. I was terrified that he would crawl somehow inside the motor and get stuck and well my imagination ran wild. I cried and cried and of course the poor baby was terrified himself. Any time I reached in, he would make sad little baby budgie crying sounds. It tore my heart into tiny little pieces. I finally did get him, I scolded myself for being so irresponsible and careless and for scaring him. We didn't bond right away. He bit me so many times lol. After training him, he was just a complete sweetheart. He would 'touch' with his beak anywhere I pointed with my finger.
By the time I noticed him sick, it was too late. Sunny flew to Rainbow Bridge on Sept 11th 2011. I scolded myself again, because in retrospect I had noticed very very small subtle changes in him. I felt horrible, because I felt like I had failed him-just like the first day. Poor Angel grieved for days. I considered getting another one in similar colour to Sunny but I just couldn't bring myself to. Mango instead stepped up to the plate and took Angel under his wing. They have bonded and are best buddies now.
I eventually did get another one coloured like Sunny. He even makes the little crying noises too! I named him Pheonix in memory of Sunny.
Here he is:
Here is Angel, Banana and Mango. I love these pics because in each one, one of them is looking away. I think they thought it was a game-
"look at the camera Mango/Banana/Angel"
Budgies thinking: "ok,..look away..nnnow..and nnnooow, and now." LOL
Well that's all for now. Thanks for reading!
