Hi Allan. Giving extra calcium is unnecessary if a cuttle bone supplied. along with a good mix of fruit & veg. egg seed etc...B.J.

Allan, I think Barrie's recommendation for the calcium supplement IS for the breeding times, because the egg creation takes extra calcium.
I don't breed, but I feed a bit of boiled eggshell reasonably regularly, it's fun to chew/shred and eat plus contains calcium as well.

I am not sure whether it's just for breeding times or not but it is a good idea to make sure your birds get the calcium.
I in fact switched back to Trill from a "normal" birdseed to make sure my birds get all they need. But I still give them Calcivet occasionally.

I provide them with Calcivet for 7 to 10 days, every 60 days or so.

The problem with calcium in the water is wether they want it or not (need it ) they have to drink to survive

I am with you on this point Nigel They always know what they want and go for it but they can't do that with calcium in water. Also both cock and hen drink the same water while breeding when cock needs a lot less calcium than hen. What alternatives other than cuttlebones do you use?

well i've been breeding budgies for over 13 year now and *touch wood* my hens have all been very healthy, lived to good ages and reared strong strapping chicks all without the addition of any sort of dietary supplement...calcium or otherwise! if the proof is in the pudding well then i'll be sticking with the cuttlebone and oystershell grit
