I currently have 25 chinese painted quail chicks i hatched out from my last chicks i hatched out. Im NEVER hatching this many at once again! They are so much trouble lol i could barly crush enough food for them when they were tiny as they were eating it so fast. Now i dont have to do that they have found new ways to be pains in the bum. They think its a good idea to burry the water feeders, then one thought it wold be good to knock then over and sleep on them and when it comes to moving them to clean (as there in a cage in my living room) they keep escaping and running under the dining tabel where i cant reach them! One morning i woke up to 4 missing as they had managed to knock the lid of the cage to uncover a cornor and were sleeping across the room and had been pooping all over the floor!! ok pics (if i can get them to work that is) Cant get them to work for some reason, so here is a link to another site where i posted them. www.fancymicebreeders.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=11643

Hi I have seen them kept in a aquarium. With a muslin top. It solves most of your problems. Before anyone complains. I do mean in the accepted ratio of bird to space. with play out time....B.J.

Hi PP. They sound like right bundles of mischief, but I can't get your photo links to open. 25 of anything is an awful lot in the house! Rather you than me, lol. ;D

When old enought they go out into the avery at work but its haveing building work done so there still stuck in the cage. Just moved them to a bigger petshop type unit (the size they use for things like rats/guinea pigs and sometimes a rabbit) at work. Given them a big bowl of water (hopefully no one falls in, i wouldnt put it past them) and gave them some meal worms to try today, all but 3 were terrified and huddled in the conor and 3 dug around snatching them up. Also put in a big tube and some wood so they have muc more space and places to hide in and sit on. ;D
Ill try to re do the links now

I give crushed up chick brumb, you have to crush it as there too tiny to eat it whole. Never tryed egg food with the babies but the adults do pinch the leftovers the budgies have left (which isnt much lol). You can get water feeders for them that will prevent them from falling in and getting soaked, i lurnt that pritty fast lol

you sure got a great mix from that batch of babies, gorgeous looking birds the lot of them when i occasionally hatch as many as you have i dont bother feeding chick crumbs for the first week...at all! but instead feed boiled egg yolks...boiled eggs are part of my baby quail diet anyway so its absence doesn't make all that much of a difference really, i dont see why the likes of budgie/finch egg food couldn't be fed, i'd image the kind you can feed dry would be best...tbh as long as whatever you feed is equally nourishing and has a high protien content then your laughing normally when i hatch my usual couple at a time i feed them crushed chick crumbs and boiled egg yolks (roughly 50/50) for the first week, then slowly they're introduced to my homemade oatmeal brown bread, little teeny tiny bits of greens and finch/budgie seed...oh and they get blue maw seed from day one as even just a mere sprinkling of it among the other food encourages them to start feeding (and gets that important first feed out of the way)

sound like yours are very well fed. I was suprised by the colours, i know when i brought there paretns eggs the add said they also bred pieds but all hatched as solid colours. I lost on the other day so down to 25. I honistly didnt think that many would hatch as most of the eggs were over 3 weeks old so i put a load in. Will be sticking to 12 at a time i think.

ah i dont have that many mutations now sadly, just a mix of cinnamon, pearl's and pieds...my three fav mutations though i only ever hatch out a handful at a time nowadays for two reasons one is cos my old boys are getting on a bit now and are not nearly as fertile as they were in their youth so less of the eggs i collect hatch but i also don't put as many in the incubator as i used to, i have a little brinsea incubator thats only supposed to take three hens eggs (which its designed to automatically turn) but years ago i discovered that if i turn them myself by hand i could easily cram 20+ in there LOL and so i did for many years but as enjoyable as it is its also an awful lot of hassle having so many at one time like that (as im sure you know) they eat you out of house and home for a start! ;D so i just try to have about 4 or 5 at a time now, just enough to keep each other company and for me to get my quail baby fix lol

yeah i can imagin now lol. I was suprised by the cost of chickcrumb as the old quails i had hatched at work so used there food but its realy cheap up here.
i used works Octagon 20 ECO Incubator and 40 eggs didnt even half fill it! They also have Brinsea Mini (not the auto turn one), used it once with gambels eggs but wasnt impressed with it after using the other one as its much easyer.
Ill be keeping back a few to live at work and thinking of selling some at the local farmers market and the rest are going to a friend of a friend.
