Just set up new cage, its lovely and roomy but there isnt a lot of gap for the tray to slot in, I was going to use wood pellets but they dont fit very well, we dont have newspapers. So I have just put loose bird sand on the bottom, this will be ok wont it, there is not grill over the tray? Attachments:

to be fair i used sand in my aviary for 8 years and never had a problem ... ......but ......when i joined the budgie forums about 4 years ago ... i said about using sand..... and i was told its not a good idea ...as its not soluble and my birds did eat some of it ....so i stopped using sand and used news papper ...which to be fair cost less ..than sand... as i was given old news papers by people that just read them then chucked them away ... its easy to get old papers as people would rather give them to you than bother to recycle ... by the way i love your cage ....its a very good size...but would change the pirches for fruit branches if you can get them ...not plum as its bad for budgies ...or willow is very good for them ...they can eat the barch and it does them good.. ..

Birds can consume it accidentally. Newspapers are always better.

Will maybe use up the sand I have and ask people to save me newspapers for when I have run out. After I took this picture I swapped all the perches but one for natural ones. I already had one apple branch in there. He also has one of those bendy rubber ones which he seems to love already.

I am using sand and grit at the moment at the bottom of the breeding cage as I had the same problem with the tray. I sent for a bundle of fish and chip papers off ebay so there was no print on but the birds in all the cages nibbled the paper to shreds, so I lined the bottom of my 2 main cages with some fablon, its got a mottled effect so disguises anything dropped and always looks clean, I just sprinkle a bit of sand and grit on top

Just a tip from an old hand, don't put the lower perches directly under the top perches. They will simply become poop collectors and can be hard to clean. Space them far enough away so that when Birdie is sitting on the top perch, his bum isn't over the bottom perch.

Those are the perches I put in mine they are so much better and the budgies love them. I dont know why the manufactures put plastic ones in their cages they must know they are bad for budgies and it worries me to think that people who dont join a forum will use them not knowing they are bad for budgies

They are just out of the way, I checked, by the way here are new perches, much better very good move .. . plastic perches are easy to clean ..... but thats the only good thing about them ... . and i forgot to say .... thats a great idea ..... having the water dispenser ... it stops them pooing in there water ..... then drinking contaminated water .... plus you dont have to clean and refill it every day ... so saves time and more important.. much more healthy ..... .

I have never used plastic perches, I have used the wooden dowel types but in all varying widths but yes I agree the branch ones are better, I didnt know if I should leave the spout drinker in, he doesn't seem to get as much out of it
