Good evening.
I keep developing new allergies. Never suffered from them in my life. I know keeping budgies can cause asthma and other lung diseases. But what about allergies?
Thank you.

Irina i was tested allergic to feathers 30 years ago and can't use feather pillows etc. When i adopted our budgies i forgot all about it. I sneezed for two weeks and now don't, however i have a terrible barking cough every morning for an hour. The benefit to my mental state, in my opinion, out ways my allergy! However it depends how allergic you currently are and it may be detrimental to your health ( asthma etc). Maybe you could house sit some for a friend for a week or so and see how you get on. Good luck

Thank you for your reply. I seem to get allergies now to all sorts of things, out of the blue. Also, I started having an allergic reaction all day don't know to what. I had budgies for several years.

Hi irina, have you thought about an air filter? we have a lot of fur and feathers in the house so I bought one about 3 years ago. It's got a ceramic filter so doesn't need any maintenance, I know it works because I've moved ours around and which ever piece of furniture it's near doesn't get hardly any dust settling.

Hi Irina and welcome to the forum Sorry to hear you are experiencing this as it can prove to be very uncmfortable I know. If they are chest and/or nasal allergies you may wish to consider getting an air purifier for the room you and your birds are in? Make sure you get one that has a HEPA filter in it too as that should help If they are skin/contact allergies are they to do with cleaning your birds out? It is not good to use any old cleaners for birdy cages and accessories and am sure our members would recmmend F10SC disinfectant for cleaning. And again if it is skin allergies either to do with cage or disinfectants you can always get those non latext/allergy gloves. You can buy them from most supermarkets. Hope that helps and you manage to sort out, let us know how you get on

Agree with what Sam said - also wear a mask.
btw birds don't "cause" asthma, it has to be there in the first place.

I have always had an allergy to dander and dust mite, I discovered it years ago when I had a cockatiel. Birds are too nice to not have one though. I just make sure I damp dust every day in the room where Pickle is and hoover lots! Its worth it. Good luck

Some very good advice there, from people who have "been there, done that". And found ways to improve on their environment.
