Pepito said his name clearly today for the first time! My Mum heard him first then my sister and I heard him at the same time a while later. It's so clear and he keeps saying it over and over now he's finally got it! He's been saying "good boy!" and "wee budgie" for a couple of weeks but I was dying to hear him say his name. ;D

It's so cute when they start to talk. It kinda happens all of a sudden, like they've been storing it up until it settles.

Oh, what a feeling! It is almost like your own child making a milestone. I am teaching Sparky to shake hands at the moment - that's a pretty easy one.

Aw. Good Boy Pepito. Wish mine would talk - mind you it would be nothing but obscenities probably

Thanks everyone! Now that he's got it he keeps saying it. It's quite definite too - Pe-PI-TO - sounds a bit like he's thinking, now will you shut up saying that!! :-)
Hezz, how do you teach a budgie to shake hands?! I think Pepito would enjoy learning tricks as he loves to be played with.. ;-)

As you may remember, Ruth, Sparky is my feral (as I call him). He is not as tame as the others, but he is really good at stepping up, so I am using that and only giving him a little bit of finger rather than my whole finger -just enough for one foot. And saying "shake-hands" rather than step-up. Even though he isn't as quiet as the other two, he is still a easy-going little guy (only ever bitten me twice), will allow me to kiss his belly etc, so I am doing it while he is in the cage (he, he, he can't fly away from me then. ). When he gives me only one foot, I just put my thumb lightly over his foot and give it a shake. With Sparky it is fairly easy to get just one foot as he is usually quite slow about getting both feetup when stepping up, and that's what gave me the idea.

Aw that sounds quite easy, I must try it! :-) Sparky sounds like a fun budgie.. Pepito used to like his tummy stroked but he either tries to bite me now or just steps onto the finger I'm stroking him with! Not sure if he'd like a kiss very much though I must admit I sometimes sneakily kiss his back when he's not facing me! :-)

Good luck with it then Ruth, and yes you just have to sneak in a kiss whenever you can. With Blue I am only allowed to go beak-to-beak (but manage some belly feathers if I am lucky) and sometimes give him a scratch around the cheeks, Smudge will allow me to kiss her belly but not touch her any where else, Sparky, it's belly feathers only too, but at least he doesn't lean over so far backwards that he nearly falls off, which Smudge does.

Few days ago Puck was on my finger and started rubbing his cheeks against my thumb, closing his eyes as he did it. Was a wonder moment for me ;D
Ever since I've found he'll let me ruffle his cheeks and his stomach some times with my finger/thumb. However he's always up for me doing it with my nose, I reckon he thinks its my beak hehe

I'm a brand new budgie now am I? :-) Or is that what Pepito is? He's almost still a brand new budgie... :-) These new names for us all are funny, who thought them all up?
