On Ian & Marshall's first visit to the avian vet (see budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=budgiehealth&action=display&thread=252&page=2), they were advised to - gradually - ditch their Trill in favour of Harrison's Potency Super Fine pellets, to combat the signs they were apparently showing of fatty liver disease (I'm not sure that there were real signs, other than their being a bit overweight, or so the vet said. They don't look excessively pudgy to me!) Surfing around a bit, there seem to be mixed views about this kind of diet. Does anyone have any views/advice/comments?

Thanks for that, Mick. Do you have any thoughts about seed and fatty liver disease?

Sounds a bit like when you go to the vet with a dog or cat and they tell you it needs that hills science plan food and it costs a fortune for small bags when all you need to do is, research food with a lower protein etc .
Those pellets are organic so maybe the vet is right into his organic food

Their natural diet is seeds. They survive on it in the wild so there is no way why they shouldn't do so in captivity.
The best budgie diet is mixed millet and canary seeds and fresh fruits and vegetables, around 60% - 40% respectively.

Rose, there've been a few people who've had to deal with chubby birds. If I remember, they worked on more flight time, removing the fattiest seed from the mix (was it oats? - the big ones anyway), adding a little bit more canary seed to the mix proportionally, and trying to get them eating more vegetables.
Someone else may know more.

Hi I wrote a post on the subject of pellets. It's on page 2 it had four replies all agreeing ..NO pellets. So if you want a view from the opposition I'm afraid you will have to look elsewhere. On a site that shall remain nameless I received...4 no to pellets. 9 undecided. 27 yes 27 calling me anything from a trouble maker to a dishonest person who could offer no other proof except personal experience, having worked in the industry. They would reply with reams of stuff from the web. Most of it stating that pellets are made from the finest ingredients it's on the www so it must true... Yea like those 9 seed companies caught supplying seed contaminated with toxic''s harmful to birds...Sorry ranting..B.J.

Thanks a lot for that, Marianne. Do you know of any good place to get Avi-chol? They're not wild about veg but they do normally have a bit of broccoli, a few bites of spinach or rocket and some sweetcorn. Their beaks were clipped yesterday (poor Ian's had to be cauterized as it bled - he now has a red spot along with his black cheek spots) but I don't think they were particularly long (first time clipped in 5 and a half years) and no dark spots that I can see. I think the vet was just assuming, overweight budgies - fatty liver disease here we go!

seed Many thanks for that, Bird Junky. My natural inclination is against pellets, now I've found out more about them (i.e. that they're NOT a natural food at all) - similarly to when I discovered what Quorn was made of (see www.drbriffa.com/2008/04/18/when-is-a-healthy-food-not-a-healthy-food-after-all/)! Could you please give me the link to your post? I wasn't sure what you meant by 'on page 2' ...

Thanks for that, Mick. Do you have any thoughts about seed and fatty liver disease? well the first time i had my budgies... it was for 8 years .... i wasn't a member of any budgie forums ... so i didn't no any different than what local breeders told me ... my budgies had only a seed only diet.... /cuttle bone/ iodine blocks and holm sand as grit ... i never had any liver problems at all... some times i think theres to much info out there ... and we worry to much...about to much .... its hard to say whats needed and whats over the top..

I have Harrison's pellets available for my birds outside the cage. They often eat them so they must like them. They are probably fine for a treat or a change, but I doubt I would replace seed with pellets... As for I&M, perhaps you could think of ways they could work to get their food? I don't mean hiring them out as chimney sweeps..... but foraging....
