Hi
Now that my second brood are almost fledged I am ready to start acclimatising them to the outside world and move them into the aviary.
At the moment its undercover but i am open to resiting it if necessary.
Is it acceptable for them to be in the shade all the time or would they benefit from a little bit of sun.
I am in Perth, Australia and the aviary is zincalume (sp).
I am going to put a water mister in the aviary as well to help with cooling when we hit the summer proper......good idea?
Thanks

An outdoor aviary should have a transparent covered roof which allows the sunlight but stops the droppings of the wild birds.

hi jackie .... . i think BJ .... and BB... has told you nearly all you need to no .... . i would just like to add .... if you can make it on a concrate base and dubble wire the flight this would be best.. . but as BB said a clear cover on the roof is a must..... but dont forget it has to be wired as well .... .

Hi
Can I just mention that we are in perth where summer temps reach 40 degrees plus. I think a transparent roof would leave me with heat stressed or dead birds.
The roof of the housing is covered but the flights is all mesh around the sides........I was just wondering whether some early morning sun or evening sun would be of benefit making sure they are in shade for the majority of the day.
Which is why I was getting the mister installed to cool them down when necessary.
I have the option of moving it now before the birds are relocated.
Jackie xx

Hi A tea tray full of water to bath in at their pleasure is a better idea If it gets too hot they will go inside where you can set up a fan to gently circulate the air....B.J.

My avian vet told me they get 40% of the sunlight, even in the shade. They should be ok with shade and especially if it is very hot. I live in California, USA - lots of sun and it can get hot and I would rather they had shelter. if you can get a half/half sun and shade arrangement that would be good, but I would not do clear roofs.
