Hello all, I'm deciding to once again start breeding budgies, seeing that the ringneck breeding season is almost over and I can devote my time to research and breed common pet type budgies. I have decided to breed individual pair per cage system, as last year I tried breeding in a colony system and encountered some problems, I will be on leave in december for 2 weeks, so that will give me ample time to build my cages before I acquire new breeding stock in the new year
I have researched online and decided to build my cages to around the following specs
Lenght - 90cm or 36 inches Width - 45cm or 18inches Height - 45cm or 18inches
The nestbox may go inside or outside, haven't decided yet. Each breeding cage will have 3 bowls in total, 1 for water, 1 for seed and 1 for softfood and fruit and veg
Half the cage will be sheltered and the other half left open for sunlight
Will place 2 wooden perches into each cage, 1 in the shaded area and 1 in sunlight
What do you guys think on my plans for my cages, will they be adequate spacewise, what other suggestions your guys give me with regards to cage breeding budgie

Hi Personally i wish everyone would use your cage dimensions. instead of asking how small a cage can I squeeze a pair into... Nest boxes in or out??? they both have problems....B.J.

Thank B.J. I will probably do a DIY build of my cages so that it will give others an idea of how to make their own
Thanks Lushen

Sure I will definitely put up step by step pics once I start which will be middle of December when I go on leave. Just wanted to know if I can use the same size aviary for exhibition budgies if I decide to breed exhibition budgies instead of common petshop budgies or should I go bigger, if so how much bigger should I go in terms of lenght, width and height
Thanks Lushen

Thanks guys for all the replies, maybe I should state here that I'm planning to breed budgies whether common or exhibition in outdoor aviaries and not in a birdroom like most of you guys have, I know that common budgies breed well in outdoor aviaries but not sure about exhibition budgies if they would breed well in outdoor cages
Thanks Lushen

What do you mean by outdoor aviaries? I know you said that colony breeding didn't work for you.

Yes I'm not going to breed in a colony, want to try breeding 1 pair per cage, but the cages will be outdoors, and not in a birdroom
Thanks Lushen

What will be the outside temperature because the temperature and humidity in the nest boxes are very important.

Not sure about outdoor temperature, as it fluctuates on a daily basis, my ringneck breeding pairs, stay outdoors throughout the year with no problems experienced, not sure if exhibition budgies would manage the outdoor weather throughout the year
Thanks Lushen
