Hi, Proud new official owners of Bert the Budgie (no one claimed him in the seven days) here! I bought some Trill last week, it being the only seed I was aware of and we needed something quick.. I have now poured the seed in to a big pot and can see all this white stuff in there.. Almost like chips of ceramics... Is this right? I don't want to give him anything that will hurt his little tummy!! Have been picking bits out the last few days! Will get something better tomorrow from pet shop but he needs his food today. Can any one help? Thanks

Trill has a good reputation. You don't need to replace it. The white chips are probably bits of oyster shell grit. All fine.

Yaay to Bert staying with you... I know the panic over every thing ha ha Elf is my first ever Budgie and still now (a year on ) i still worry over things but this forum and the wonderful people help me out ALOT... I give Elfie trill and they do put oyster shell in it as Stace says....I did used to give him pet shop stuff but read some where that some times you don't really know how they store there stuff and rats could have weed on it etc etc etc so now we just have Trill all the way more expensive but at least you know its clean and for a worrier like me it puts my mind at ease.... Cant wait to hear all about Bert as time goes on and like me you will become more and more confident and knowledgeable towards little Bert x

Welcome to the forum Vixter and also welcome to Bert. He has obviously landed on his feet and found a very caring mum. Well done and congratulations! Looking forward to hearing more about Bert and some pictures please.

Make sure Bert gets clean water in a cleaned container every day, and that any fruit or veg you give him is only kept in his cage for a few hours or so. Most budgie health problems are caused by contamination of their water or food by bacteria.

There are shows and auctions all over the country where you can buy good quality reasonably priced seed. I buy all mine in bulk including Maize sticks.
