My new babies just love carrot, apple, brocolli, parsley and basil. They love basil so much that they start licking your hand and under your nails just to make sure they havne't missed any bits. It's so cute.

Hi Just thought this might interest you...B.J. NEW THINKING ON FRUIT & VEG, Edited version In the latest experiments about the feeding of the usual fruit & veg mixes. Having found that some fruits/veggies, contain enzymes that interfere with the uptake of nutrients from other sources, inc, other f/v. Spinach & Parsley etc. Have already been found to contain both oxalic & phytic acid which blocks the absorption of, calcium, zinc & iron. Putting a strain on the kidneys, causing the blood to lose its clotting ability. Green veg also contains up to 90% water. Fed in large amounts can lead to excess urine in their droppings. Additives are also known to inhibit the intake of natural nutrients in some fruits & veggies. Additives in water become ineffective in a few hours. The suggested feeding is of only one type of a fruit or veg per day. A birds body was designed by evolution to extract all the nutrients it needs from the food it eats but not necessarily all on the same day. Since time of writing, (earlier this year) I am now informed that during these experiments. It was found that some fruits can have adverse effects on some prescription drugs. So the study of mixing fruit/veg, has been shelved in favour of the more important prescription drug study......B.J. p.s. The only time I would stop feeding veggies is when you are giving them medicine. I'm not sure about vege messing with the content of the meds, but when they are unwell it's best to stick with just seed, millet and water. Plus, without veg in their diet, you can better see what's actually happening with their poop - especially important to monitor when ill.

I try to give my lot two different types of veg at once, such as celery and carrot, or brocolli and sweetcorn. I think the idea is to not overload them with it all at once but as long as they are eating it happily I don't see the problem

It is well-documented that spinach in particular interferes with the absorption of calcium. For this reason alone I would not give it to my birds. There are plenty of other leafy greens for them to munch on that don't have this affect. Mind you, they aren't likely to find it in my house anyway - I can't stand the stuff!! ;D

You're welcome, Ann. Don't stop giving them their greens, maybe just reduce the amount, if you think that is all they are eating.

You may well be right there-I think the boys would prefer it if I keep giving them their calcium from the milk though, can you imagine what they'd say to a cuttlebone each instead, tee hee!! Just wish they wouldn't drink it straight from the bloomin' bottle though, grr..... Does anyone know if any particular veggies are like a "superfood" for budgies? Just curious because I know a good balance is best, and luckily mine eat veg without trouble.- I know there are supposed to be superfoods for humans where the beneficial bits and bobs are really concentrated into the amount of the food you actually eat...
