My little Grandaughter loves to make things and she was round today playing with her HUGE box of beads and cutting out pretty things with coloured paper when she looked at me with wide eye's and said, I KNOW we could make some pretty things for the budgies. Now ive thought of this before but have been wary of what to use to string things together as i don't want them getting any bit's inside them with strings. I believe it was Stace that mentioned strips of leather but i cant find that anywhere, any other idea's, how about raffia.

I use plastic laces, the kind you find in children's bead kits

Art and craft shops is where I get mine, but the online stores that provide toys to be made up should have them.

You could try hobbycraft. Any place where they sell jewellery making bits and pieces is also worth a try. Do you have "The Range" near you? They are a good place for crafty bits. Leather thong (behave), or laces are usually available in an untreated natural finish which is best to use obviously as it will undoubtedly end up in a budgies beak! If I was using it for bird toys I personally would give it a drench in boiling water and a good rinse, along with any beads etc if they've been knocking about a bit at home!

Untreated leather strings and laces are the best in my opinion. I do what Sarah suggested - give them all a good boil and vinegar rinse, beads and all. Just hope you don't have a Misty in your midst - she is THE expert knot untie-er.
