An update. No change! Well, there was a little change but it was down to moulting. Phineas became less excitable & during the day all 3 managed to sit in the Manor, quietly preening. They all managed to sit on the window perch together & watch the snow. Progress I hoped, but no.... Phineas is back to bouncing off the walls! He does go back to his own cage for seed though (when the Manor is locked up), but I might have to wait until 8pm tonight (another 5 hours.....)

Such lovely buds, beautiful colours. I have a different problem with odd numbers. Although my 4 have accepted Inca with no malice at all and she is very polite in their company i feel she is very much on her own. They wont actually sit with her and chat and if she goes to them they move away . She seems to spend her day looking at herself in the mirror or saying excuse me to get to the seed pots , therefore i think im going to introduce a new male and see if they bond but there is of course no guarantees. Have you tried just riding it out with them all in one cage, my feelings are that they would settle after two or three days. I think the separation situation may be highlighting things a little, in that when they do get together the excitement is too much. Just a thought .

It is promising that there is no fighting in your flock & they are polite. Like you say, there are no guarantees that a new one will change things in Inca's favour. You may be right about the separation making things more intense. Phineas is very excitable. When he was a little calmer, during moulting, they would all sit in the manor together, but in his current mad-as-a-box-of-frogs state, I notice that when he goes in the manor, Cagney & Bezukhov come out! I have wondered if he has bad breath.

I would try riding it out, have you let them have a sleep over together, try the night times when they are all calmer and ready for bed .

Have they actually ever reached fistycuffs, or is it more of a handbags at dawn thing .

I have not had the courage to force them to sleep together overnight. There does not seem to be a natural progression to this. During the evening, Cagney & Bezukhov start getting sleepy & want to doze. Phineas (surprise surprise) still wants to run about & beak tap. More often than not, in the evening, when Phineas goes into their cage, Bezukhov immediately departs. Also, when Cagney sits on the rope perch in the loft area (bedtime position) Phineas usually sits outside on the cage bars above him (even though cage doors open) as that is technically the nearest he can be to him without being jabbed at. Sometimes during the day I watch Cagney & imagine what his view is like & probably for about 90% of the time he will just have a close up view of Phineas. On the plus side, they seem to *like* each other. When I brought Phineas home from the vet I put the travel cage on the coffee table whilst I let C & B out & they immediately flew over to sit on the travel cage to see Phineas. I think they quite like him but perhaps not 24/7! Also, yesterday I noticed Bezukhov attempting to chat to Phineas in a calm manner (Bezukhov is relatively sane for a budgie) & it resulted in a little friendly beak tapping. Of course Cagney had to then investigate & stopped their flow. I guess what I am trying to say is that introducing a third budgie to the flock requires lots of observation & it doesn't help if you have work to be getting on with!

Nothing is easy with more than one budgie, is it? There is always some-thing (or -one) to upset the apple-cart. If I take one of mine off for one-on-one time or with Smudge having her gland massaged, the others always seem to hover around after ...... maybe to make sure they are still in one piece ....
