Hello all. Just looking for some advice. Has anyone successfully introduced a third male budgie to two existing male budgies? I ask as I have a situation where my "third" budgie, the delightful but troublesome (!) Phineas is having difficulty integrating with Cagney & Bezukhov. There is, thankfully, no fighting. Phineas still has his own cage. He appears besotted with Cagney & though Cagney is happy to chat to his new admirer, he doesn't really want anything more. The situation now is that when I let Cagney & Bezukhov out, they immediately fly over to Phineas's cage & basically sit with him & chat through the bars. When I let Phineas out, he immediately zooms in on Cagney & chases him all over the place! To give Cagney a rest, I lock both him & Bezukhov in their cage & Phineas is left prowling over the top of it. If Phineas goes into the boys cage, they both leave! Any advice? I had hoped they would all share a cage but this has been going on since around November & I'm not sure if the situation is likely to change. BTW, Phineas will not go back to his own cage, I have to put him in myself! He does know how to get back in as he goes in when Bezukhov has sneaked in to eat his seed! Here is Mr Trouble himself:  BTW2: I have plans to get a fourth budgie, although I know that's no guarantee things would work out.  |

I can't answer you question but Phineas is lovely with a naughty little glint in his eye.

What a lovely looking bird Phineas is.
I wonder if persistence and continuing patience might pay off for you although having tried since November that is a fair time!
Unfortunately I haven't the experience to offer any advice.
My six (3 of each gender) get on well and have done since they first came home. Just lucky I guess.

Funnily enough, he is registered as "Lovely Boy" at the vets, as I took him the day after I got him & had not yet named him.  |

I have kept odd budgies in different numbers in cages without any problem.

Its a hard question to answer because although budgies will in general get along quite well, they all have their own personalities and little quirks. For example I have six budgies that live together. There are Milo and Lola who are a lovey dovey couple, then theres JayJay and Alfie who have a well established bromance, they feed and preen each other all the time. Then there is Milly who keeps to herself but she does chase JayJay around if he's head bopping at her ;D Then there is Ozzie who seems to not really be bothered by the other budgies, he'll eat with them, sing away with the boys and wind up Milo on very rare occasions but he is very much a loner and likes me more He is a very happy budgie though, happier than when he was an only budgie. My point is you can never guarantee what will happen when you introduce another budgie, they could immediately be best friends, not interested at all, or even take up with one of the other budgies boy/ girlfriends! ;D |

The most I have had at one time is 4 & they all got on so I haven't experienced this situation before. It is looking like I will have to put up with it!!! I don't mind them living in separate cages though it is a bind having to grab Phinny each time to get him home. Also, when they are all out together I feel more comfortable if I am there to supervise them. It would be interesting to throw another one into the mix! Then I might have to have 3 cages in my tiny lounge!  You must spend hours watching your flock as they sound so entertaining. |

How does Phineas behave with Bezuhkov? What would happen if Cagney was removed from the equation and Phinn and Bez had time out together? With Cagney out of the room? You may find that Phin is happy to have anyone to play around with and this could strengthen the P and B friendship, and lessen the addiction to C. (Sorry, I am lazy with not typing all their names out each time). Does C actually mind being followed around? More questions than answers. |

Yes, lots of questions, Hezz! ;D Phineas prefers Cagney in that he will chase Bezukhov out of the way so he has C to himself. Unfortunately, B & C are good mates (not a bromance, just mates) & like to be together but now that is only possible if they are either locked up or P is locked up. C gets fed up having P as his shadow as that means he's unable to eat (P too overexcited to eat with him) & he is unable to sit with B, for example on the window perch. I have wondered about taking C temporarily out of the equation but could not go as far as to take him out of the room. If C is locked up & B & P are out, then P will just sit on the cage above or beside where C is sitting. However, today I noticed that when C & B were dozing in the cage, P looked to me for attention! (Normally he ignores me outside the cage.) It's possible that P is just a VHM (Very High Maintenance) budgie!!!! |

Nothing wrong with that, but I do understand how insistent a budgie can be when wanting to be with another .......  Have you tried putting a cover over the cage when C is "unavailable"? I was doing this with Fluoro and Misty when I had them out for training. Surprisingly it seemed to work - what they couldn't see, they didn't seem to realise the other one was still there. May be worth a shot. |

May be worth a shot. I just tried the cover over C trick but it didn't quite work.... C went mad trying to look out under the cover & P went mad trying to see C & B just went in Phineas's cage to eat seed! These birds can drive ya mad! |
