Hello all, I'm sorry that my introduction post is a sad one. About 2 days ago my Mums budgie Pippin died, we were both here with him when he passed but it is a massive loss, he was almost 12 which I hear is a long life for a budgie?
Anyhow, we have decided that we'll get a new one (or 2) soon, as my mother is disabled & enjoys the company & I became very attached to him too.

Welcome to the forum Jay. I am sorry about your loss of Pippin. I hope you find a beautiful pair soon. Try to get it directly from a breeder.

((hugs)), I hope you find another little person very soon, we've only had ours less than a week and I just can't imagine life without him now. Love to your Mum too, small creatures can leave very big holes in our hearts.

Welcome, Jay. Just wish it was under better circumstances than your poor mother losing her feathered friend. Pippin has a pretty good innings, so don't feel too bad about his passing - he obviously had a very good life with you two. If your mother is looking for the same sort of bond that she had with the one bird, I would suggest for the time being getting only the one. Two bird together form their own bonds and generally we humans come a very poor second to their budgie mate. If she is happy being an observer of the budgie "flock" then by all means get two together.
There are many pros and cons for a single budgie and two or more. Another question to ask is who will be doing the training?

Oh dear. I'm so sorry about Pippin. He lived to a good old age with you and I'm glad you were there for him when he passed on. It's so sad, as we do love them so, I know.

A good age for Pippin I think, I trust that your sadness will soon be replaced with the joy of having another little 'fella' (or female, or both!) to cheer your (and your mam's) days. God bless

Wow, can't believe my bad luck so far this year, since my initial post here my computer died & my face has swollen up due to tooth infection & abscess!
But to answer some questions, I'll be the one doing most of the training as my mother is riddled with arthritis. I thought buying two would be good so they would have company, I've done a fair bit of reading & it seems they like company of their own kind, or am I completely wrong here?

No, not wrong at all. Just that if your mum had a really close connection with Pippin and was looking for that same connection, then a single bird would be good, especially as she and birdie would have the whole day together. For a budgie left by itself for hours during the day, then a companion bird is a really good thing. They are a flock bird and will look to bond with firstly another budgie(s), but if this isn't available, then their human(s) become their flock. Having two birds can give just as much enjoyment, but of a different kind, as having just the one. With two, you more take a back seat and enjoy the journey, whereas with the one you are basically the driver. Hope that makes sense to you.
