we are thinking about getting a friend for bertie in a few months. bertie is 5 years old, is it better to get another male or a female? and what age group?

As Bertie is a male, it doesn't really matter about the sex of the new bird, however, you might be better with another male as females can be a bit bossy. Someone who has experience of multiple birds will be able to give you better advice on that than me, however.

Hi Dallas. My recommendation for Bertie's friend would probably lean towards a male too, if he is unused to having a friend. As for the age, I think a lot would depend on what YOU would be looking for from this second budgie. If you are looking at him simply as a friend for Bertie, age isn't really an issue, but if you wish to have the friend tame and social, then it is a whole heap easier working with a very young bird, that a mature one. Unless, of course, you have the good fortune to come across a mature budgie who is in need of a home and has already been trained and used to human interaction. Young birds can be a bit of a nuisance to an older bird, though, just like a young puppy can annoy an older dog to the point of being snapped at ......... how tolerant is Bertie?
