Oh this will be brilliant, as I've been wondering what fruit and veggies I can feed my boys.
And as a side, it should help me get over my phobia of fruit and veggies. :]

Just wanted to say thank you for this post. I've tried several things and my Bluey really wasn't playing ball at first. However, I've noticed that since he's trusting me more, he's trying new things within a minute or two from my hand, rather than spending the whole day cowering away from the alien substance and refusing to use nearby perches (like he did with the sprig of broccoli I tried...)

That is the best news, vacanteyes. He may well be getting to the point where he will want to try whatever you are eating. Sometimes you just have to play around with how you present it, as well - whether grated, tiny pieces cut up, or larger slices. They are all individual when it comes to accepting particularly new foods.

I know I'm like a year too late but I thought I may as well ask although it's probably a seemily dumb question... Should I be giving my budgie fruit every single day? And how much at a time?

Most budgies prefer veggies to fruit, but generally every other day is good. There is no point wasting food - the budgie will eat only a small amount; a small piece of apple, a round of carrot, a few kernels of corn. If there is a variety, which is best, he may only have a nibble out of each one. The very best thing you can feed your budgie is grass seed-heads. Must be not sprayed, and not from busy roads due to pollution.

Early tomorrow morning (too dark now) I must nip in the aviary and remove the lumps of apple that I put in there the previous evening. I chopped the apples in half, removed some of the central cores but wasn't very thorough about removing all of the apple seeds. I did think about it at the time but imagined the birds would ignore them. Normally my birds would only be offered slices of apple but, as I had loads of windfall eating apples, I thought Id share some lumps to keep them amused.

Apple pips are toxic, Learner. They contain a form of cyanide. You should remove them asap. Best not try that one again.

Apple pips are toxic, Learner. They contain a form of cyanide. You should remove them asap. Best not try that one again. Thanks for the information Hezz. I think the birds will be OK until the morning as they are far too interested in "eating" the new woodwork to bother with apple. I gave them a small pile of apples to fiddle with - most of the apple seeds were removed along with the cores. As it's 2:20am I'm not going into the aviary tonight but will be in there at first light (around 6:15am) to oik the apples out again. Typical of me... normally I'd only offer a few slices of apple. Wandering down the garden today I picked up dozens of red eating apples - I thought the birds would enjoy playing with them. Thoughts about the safety of the apple seeds were only fleeting. I should have known better. Again - thanks for your thrread and advice.

Very helpful, thank you. I'll make sure to give Billy a little bit of carrot on Christmas Day!
