I have recently (thanks, Hezz) been advised to get eucalyptus bark for my budgies and have looked into ways of sourcing this. I found the website of a company in the US www.eucproducts.com/index.html (looks fab) but sadly it is not possible for fresh foliage etc to be imported into the UK from outside the EU. Does anyone know of a source within the UK? Someone suggested florists but I would be worried about whether it had been treated with preservatives or anything that could be toxic. I would love to get my hands on some for them - the idea of providing some lovely fragrant leaves and twigs that the budgies evolved with and could get to work on appeals strongly. Thanks.

I do hope you have some luck, Birdgurl. There isn't a park close-by, or a friendly neighbor who may have an eucalypt tree growing? I know you can buy pieces of yukka from some on-line bird-toy places. These may work the same way. I have never had to try it out but they are budgie-safe, and I get the impression they are soft enough for the birds to shred easily. This doesn't address the leaves and twigs component, but would give them something to get their beak into. Good luck with your search.

Do you have room to grow a eucalyptus birdguhl? We have one at the back of the garden and it grows so quickly! It is also a lovely tree to have in the garden with it being evergreen. We have to have ours cut back every 2 years and I hate to see all the lovely fresh branches getting shredded. The large branches we burn on the woodburning stove once they've dried out. If you lived a little closer you could help yourself to as much as you needed

I know some garden centres do them, have you tried Ebay? As I think one of the forum members bought one from there

I bought my tree from a garden centre! But my friend has a mature tree that she gives me some branches when it has been trimmed!!
Have a nosey around the streets and see if you can see a tree in someones garden, then ask if you could have a few leaves!

Seems like plenty of trees; just need to find one close enough to you.

*face palm* how silly of me. Florists use eucalyptus in arrangements. At least my aunties shop does. You can ask your friendly florist or order it in for you if your just after a branch as a treat every so often!

You shouldn't use Eucalyptus or other plants from florists. They are usually treated with stuff like preservatives that can be poisonous to birds.

Thanks all for really helpful responses. I am going to have to turn my mum's garden into a eucalyptus plantation! Until that is up and running I will also keep an eye out for any trees in gardens. This will be another of many ways in which having the wee sweety tweeties in my life has made me notice all sorts of new and interesting things in the world about me! This is the first time they've been out together for ages - Berry's feathers still not great - but lovely to see them there.

It's not Eucalyptus, but I got some perches made of really really chunky barked Willow. Like this: It seems to be a good chew. You might be able to find that more easily in the UK in the meantime.
