Oh, those pics from skysmum have got me properly craving for some of that gorgeous stuff for my little lovelies... I hope this is not against forum rules or anything, but I wanted to ask if anyone with access to a tree that could spare a few twigs would be up for a bit of a mercy mission by popping some in a plastic bag and sending it to me? I will pay postage of course - perhaps send you the gubbins to make it as easy as possible. Just a thought. Meanwhile here is a pic from last night of the boys have a wee nibble at some nice greens

I have a small tree on my balcony and could spare a few twigs, where do you live?

I've been in touch with Marianne to say thanks for the offer but since she has a small tree and a lot of buds, it seems a shame to grab her twigs! If anyone has access to a nice big one... me and boys would be very grateful.

I bought mine on ebay and it's on my balcony. Perhaps you could do the same?

Whereabouts do you live birdguhl, i would be happy to send you some, not sure how long it would stay fresh for though, once its picked the leaves dry in two or three days. Eucalyptus grow sooo quick have you a garden or yard you could put a pot bought one, or a room that's cool.

Thanks v much Skysmum - will PM you about this. Oh, and remember what I said about the little lutino... Well, he's here with me now - what a sweetie - he really needed a good home. I'm not sure yet whether and when I'll introduce him to Woody and Berry, but for now he has a better home than he did before.

Just a thought, but my partners a tree surgeon and he just told me that if you prune twigs or branches off eucalyptus in cold weather it can actually kill the tree!

Just a thought, but my partners a tree surgeon and he just told me that if you prune twigs or branches off eucalyptus in cold weather it can actually kill the tree! this i didn't know, ive always harvested it year round for my lot with no ill affects. They are a devil to keep under control i know that . Will wait until the warmer weather to give it its hard cut back, thanks for the info.

I asked him how cold it had to be and he said probably zero or minus that. Its something to do with if they bleed from the cut and then freeze. Mine is growing enourmous now and I'm dying to give the budgies some.....but daren't lol. I'm hoping that him being a tree surgeon might get a eucy to chop very soon!

Been breaking off a few twigs and giving to mine lately. They love it. First time I gave it to them they ignored it! I didn't know about that either Nat..

Perhaps it depends on which type of eucy it is or how sheltered from winds it is? I'm sure I've taken off twigs in the winter before to no ill effects, but mine is really near to a high wall so might not get too much wind chill:-/ Funny how suspicious they are of new stuff. Theres always one who trys it first, the others seem to watch to see if it keels over, and when it doesn't they all join in!

Come to think of it ive prob never done it in a hard frost, mainly because i wouldn't want to venture down to the bottom of the garden when its that cold , so my tree has been saved by my lazyness . Id best leave it alone at the moment because its pretty cold out there and we have had more snow, i cant risk loosing the love of the buds life .
