When Don from the local petshop got in touch to say he had a bird which needed rehoming a few days ago I had a distinct sense of excitement. Then I decided it wasn't the right time to add another one to my two, it being still a bit uncertain re Berry's health. But I thought I would go and meet him anyway and explain my thoughts. So off I went yesterday.
Well - of course - he is now beside me as I type this and I am getting to know his ways. He is an absolutely beautiful calm lutino male about 5 years old - buttery, buttery feathers - oh my - what have I done?!
The story is that he had a cagemate but the owners thought they were too noisy together so got rid of the other one, leaving him on his own. Then they decided he was too noisy as well so handed him over to whoever would take him. Poor little love. He has quite an intense relationship with his plastic pal. It is one of those ones with a weight underneath and a noisemaking bit, but that doesn't work now.
I am going to keep him on his own as per quarantine advice, but he seems in very good condition and has been on his own, so hopefully he will be okay. I can see already that he has a much more placid nature than my other two and this evening he ate millet from my hand. I am really pleased about this. He is also piping up after being quite quiet which seems a good sign. I don't know what his name was before (we're not sure if he had one) but I think his name is going to be Luee.
The other health concern about eventually putting them all together relates to Berry's feather problems, but I am going to give him a bit longer following the mite treatment but I think he is on the up. Don is going to have a look at him in another week or so and see if he still has quills blocking the re-growth of flight feathers. Certainly the one he shed most recently was broken off rather than being whole.
When I told a friend yesterday he said what I think I already knew - that I am turning into a "mad budgie woman" - well, I am out and proud!!!
