That got your attention didn't it? If anyone uses fat balls in their garden can I just make you all aware of the dangers of leaving them in the mesh bag. Many wild birds are getting caught in them and breaking their legs while struggling to get free. I myself rescued a female blackbird from her nest where she had her leg caught when one of the bags had been used as nest materiel. The RSPCA are trying to get them banned.

They sell them a lot in the UK - at the moment we are being told that a lot of our native bird species are in decline and we have to help out by putting out food for the little fellas. Fat balls are something that a great in principle but like starlingqueen says the mesh nets they come in are not. I would say tho we are having to be even more careful as to not to leave food out too long either as it has been growing mould and has been killing off our birds! But on a positive note, I have been hearing the Chaffinches (who were in this group) starting their song so hopefully their numbers are on the rise and SPRING IS COMING!!!! Humble Male Chaffinch

Humble Male Chaffinch Poor little guys going hungry. This chap's a cute one. It's probably got more to do with us ripping out their habitat. Council pulled down four big trees on my street, and for several months afterwards there were sick and dying Ringtail Possums around often. They were trying to find shelter low down on the street int he daytime, even though they are nocturnal tree dwellers. Very sad.

Very true stace, why do we seem to think that it would be better tidied up when some stuff needs to be left alone for habbitats to thrive? And as for trees being re-planted here, we are planting the wrong type of trees?! They are planting pines that pollute the soil so no other trees can be planted there?! Oh dont even get me started! As you can tell, this is a very political issue!

Hopefully spring is just around the corner for you and the birds, Sam.
