Having done the roof my next job was going to be to insulate the aviary. Now it can get quite warm in there in the summer and im a bit worried that if i insulate it it will keep the heat in. Its quite small about 5-7 and 2 foot of that is outside flight. They have been in there for 6 years with no probs so im not sure quite what to do, and i can always bring them indoors like i did this winter . Any thoughts.

Insulating should keep the heat out, shouldn't it? We use insulation here to keep the heat from the roof penetrating into the house.

Insulation works both ways. The summer heat is coming from above - the insulation should send this back the way it comes. In winter the heat is coming from what you provide for the birds - the insulation should send this heat back to where it comes from, which is back into the birdroom. Hope this makes sense. Check with wherever you get the insulation from that it will work both ways, if you are still not sure.

Thanks guys, its true of course, its just that we are so used to insulating our homes to keep the precious heat IN, my mind was working on this theory . I have decided that ive loved having the buds in soo much this winter i am going to leave it and make the aviary their summer home only, like their own little Shimla ,their summer residence, and i can indulge myself from Oct to March and have them indoors. Ive started painting the inside white today to brighten it and freshen it up, im quite pleased with the result so far. I will also paint the ceiling but i have to wait for the roof to completely dry before i can do this. Its made such a difference to the light in there.

Why am I not surprised? I thought you may, just may, decide to keep them in the conservatory for winters. You will miss them being back in the aviary, but you will have to make use of it, or OH will be wondering why on earth he bothered over the weekend, curry or no curry!

I will miss them soooo much but i think i may have a week or two left, although its still really cold outside, bitter wind today, we have had some beautiful sun these last three days and the conservatory is already heating up, how i wish it wasn't south facing. Im having to keep an eye on the thermometer, its already reading 20 around mid day with no other heating in there. Im going to start getting paranoid now .
