Hi, I've just got 2 budgies got the first time. They are living indoors in a cage. I'm just a little concerned with heat. I like to have my heating on all the time with windows open so it's nice and warm with a little breeze. Is this bad for the budgies? Is it ok to have windows open?? Will they get too hot? Thanks for any help

Hi kevinandmia...i too was concerned about heating and was advised to put shallow bowls of water around the room and on the radiators to put humidity back in to the air...and as long as your Budgies arnt right next to the radiator im sure they will be fine.... The only thing i know about windows is not to have the Buds placed right next to them if there is a 'DRAFT' as drafts are no good for them at all...Breezes i 'think' are different from drafts but im sure the others on here will have alot more good advice to give you

Thanks for the reply. Yeh I will try that. Also one of them seems a little off.. He keeps puffing his cost and is shaking a little more than the other. He keeps like holding one eye shut aswel. But then he is the only one that's talking every now and again. The other one hadn't said anything yet I don't think. I got him on my finger yesterday but he seems really scared today. I really don't n now what I'm doing lol. I've read so much but when you have them it's so different. They seem do delicate.

Im by no means an expert, i too only recently purchased mine, but the key to success is trust. Once he or she is on your finger, give them verbal praise and a little bit of millet. Dont take your hand out of the cage to start with, just build on that trust in the cage.
If the other little one remains fluffed up, check his/her poop and make sure it looks normal. If not seek vetinary advise. A bird/Any bird do not show illness. So if they are showing illness, it usually means its well developed.
Best of luck

how long have you had your budgies for? if you have only just got them then they need to settle in to there new home/environment as it will be very scarey for them....if this is the case then i wouldnt pick them up or get them on your finger as they may just come on your finger out of pure fear for now i would just sit by their cage for a week maybe 2 (as i did) and gently talk to them and blink your eyes at them as it calms them and shows you are not a threat...after this i would slowely begin to put my hand in their cage and leave it in there still talking and blinking.... hopefully your birds will start to relax and trust you and ou can move on from there...It may seem like progress is taking ages but if you remember to be patience and go at their pace not yours then im sure in time they will be happily hoping on and off your finger like theres no tomorrow...

Yeh I just got them yesterday lol. I read a sticky in this forum advising to do it on the first day. I did get them both on my finger yesterday but today the blue one (Kevin) isn't so keen but the yellow on (Mia) seems quite calm and relaxed and she gets on my finger with gentle encouragement and prase. I haven't seen them drinking yet ether. They are eating ok just not drinking.

I would defiently just let them settle in for now and build up their trust,if you do things slowely then you will move forward instead of risking moving 3 steps back if you see what i mean....I wouldnt worry about seeing them drink ,they prob do when you arnt around or looking...Just remember its a whole new scary world to them, new home new family, new cage...Time and patience will be a great thing for both you and them and although it may take a while you Will get there in the end..

When I got my two they took a few days to settle in and start making noise and playing. They didn't seem to have food or water for a couple of days but they were just not when I was sat watching. They will settle soon just let them get over the moving and rough handling.

I was quite lucky to see Munchy eating either the first or second day I had him, but I didn't seem him drink for ages. When an animal drinks, they are vulnerable to attack from a predator, even if the other one can keep an eye out. Until they feel more comfortable they will likely be drinking when there's no one around. After hearing that I felt very content when I saw Munchy drink the first time, especially when he was happy to jump onto my hand and drink whilst I was still putting the water bowl onto the side of the cage. They also don't drink very much, usually just a few sips. Munchy normally drinks first thing in the morning and that's it for the day unless I put a bath out or am washing things under the tap, in which case he often drinks some of that water.

Also I just noticed, I put Mia on the per next to Kevin after she/he was on my finger, and Mia had just sat there staining at Kevin since and pecking him everyone n again. Kevin is just sitting there looking real lathargic bot fighting back or anything yet he is the bigger one... :/ dogs are so much easier lol

You just need to give them some time to settle in, leave them alone for two or three days, just make sure they have food and clean water. They soon get used to you doing things around their cage and they will see you are no threat to them by doing this. Then gradually offer them millet so that they get used to feeding from your hand. Patience, patience, patience is the name of the game.

Yeh I think I need to go get some of that millet stuff. I got them a branch perch, a wooden toy, a hanging seed thing, cuttlefish, and an iodine block. They only seem to be interested in the hanging seed thing. Is it ok to leave that in there?
