STILL THINK PELLETS ARE PURE? After the recent ongoing revelations in the Newspapers & TV, since January 2013, about contaminated meat in the human food chain worldwide. Not to mention the none disclosure of all ingredients. The bird feed industry use only vegetable protein in their pet bird pellets. Full disclosure of pkt, contents is not compulsory on the grounds of patent protection. Also in a mixed bag of ingredients, any one of which is up to 40% of the total, can be used to name the product. For instance, "Vegetable Protein" can be 40% Veg & 60% Offal &. fillers Hiding a perfectly good source of protein but one not so acceptable to the general public. Why would you take the word of someone you don't know, who's trying to sell you a product in a very competitive market.....B.J. All info is on the www. You just have to ask the right questions

Theres no telling what gos into any processed food! I feed seed base and fresh organic veg with my own free range eggs only. But who knows what they put into the layers pellets that feed my chickens! Think I can hazard a guess :-O

You'll find that there are very few budgie owners in the U.K that feed their birds pellets BJ, I don't know of anyone that gives them, just seed and other essentials.

The avian vet wanted me to put Ian & Marshall on pellets (he said they were too fat! poor boyz ...) but, after investigating on the internet/getting feedback on the forum, I decided against. I am now extremely glad I did!

Hey Rose, I bet Ian and Marshall are very happy with your decision :-)

I'm sure they are! Though they ARE not so happy with my decision to ban them from eating Trill Toppers and re-sell the packets I had on EBay in an attempt to get them to chub down!

Americans are really keen on pellets. Many American vets recommend them and make owners feel like they are doing the wrong thing if they don't feed their birds pellets.
Maybe they're okay for the bigger birds. Maybe some reputable brands are okay. I don't really know. The regulations around what goes in to pet food is really lax, so who knows what is in there. It's bad enough with human food.
Budgies hate them. Smart little things, as we know.

It's the same for parrots. There is always someone trying to force you to feed them pellets. I could never get to grips with the idea of feeding any bird, manufactured food when there is a perfectly good seed supply and fresh food, even free food out in the garden via weeds etc

Interesting. We've been pushed to feed our budgies pellets and I did some research and added it to their diet, not too often but we did feed them it. I haven't in awhile (several months) simply because we've just been feeding them veggies and rice and seeds....I'd be interested in some links regarding the cons of pellet feeding as I didn't find any reliable sources when I researched it back then.
