It may be a bit of a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if any of you have experienced the same thing or perhaps its just me? Do budgies like only the choice of food you give them when they are young? What I mean to say is, if you start off by giving them fruit they wont eat their veg and visa versa? Reason I was thinking: Our first bird Mont was introduced to fruit FIRST so when trying to give her vegetables, she wasn't particularly interested. SO I thought when we get our new flock, I wanted to try giving them veg first (because of the vit A in carrot mainly). Now they are eating their veg I tried Alfie the Pig on some Apple to see what he would do......and he really wasn't that fussed?! So could there be a theory to budgies preferring the foods that you introduce them to first? What do you think?

Could be, Sam. It's certainly true of humans.
When Boo was little... (aww....memories)... I used to give him all sorts of different fruit AND veggies all chopped up together. He likes both now, though he still won't always eat them. But, then again, sometimes he does.

Awww 'Alfie the Pig' bless him, fancy calling him that! I think you could have a point there Sam. What a good idea tho Stace mixing the fruit and the veg together - crafty aye?

Ive given mine a mix of both from the start and they eat both but prefer the sweeter veg like squash and carrot. I gave them Pac Choi for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago and they cant get enough of it, so that's new. Certain things they wouldn't touch with a barge pole and one of these is broccoli which surprises me because i hear so many people on the forum saying how its their buds favorite. They wont touch boiled egg either and this i have to say i never offered them when they were young.

Yes, I reckon they get used to stuff. Mine hate fruit but love veggies. But if I grate the apple with carrot they will have some

Mine are weird. They like a certain veg at at certain time They'll have say a month loving sweetcorn and not touching anything else, then onto carrot for a while, then broccoli. But they hate it mixed up together and will only eat it if its hung up or stuck in the aviary wire. I suppose in the wild, birds have to gorge on just one kind of food for a while whilst its availiable and then move onto the next food as it becomes availiable. But back to the original question....definately if they are introduced to different foods while young, they will take them more readily at a later age :-) I've had older rehome birds that won't eat veg or fruit but they use the younger ones as guinea pigs. They watch the young'uns eat it and if they don't die then the older ones will go for it ;-)

I have noticed this too, Nat. If I have something that I previously hadn't thought to offer with the older buds, and then a young one will have a go, the older ones are more inclined to try too. I am happy to say that now I have offered them almost everything I can think of and most will get a nibble, but there are definite favourites. Sam, maybe you need to mix the apple with the carrot, be sneaky like Marianne.

Seems like everyone is as usual one step ahead of me, put the fruit/veg together and what do they know?! As for younger and older birds, agree with nat if the younger ones go for it oooh suddenly the older ones are interested! Interesting thoughts guys, given me something to work on

I see it as "what the blazes is that young thing feeding on now? Seems to be enjoying it ............ well, if it's good, can't let him have it all!"

I see it as "what the blazes is that young thing feeding on now? Seems to be enjoying it ............ well, if it's good, can't let him have it all!" Plus the fact we all know that if one has something the other HAS to have it whether they wanted it or not in the first place, that goes with food, toys, perch space etc.

I think that it does very much depend on what age they are introduced to them yes. My aviary budgies have all either come from breeders that put them on a great diet from day one or are my home bred budgies who have also had veggies from the minute they were old enough. They all go mad for their veggies, so crazy for them that if given the choice between seed or sweetcorn (for example) they would ignore the seed lol!
My house budgies are a bit different, they don't go as mad for it, other than JayJay, but he was older when I got him and had been brought up in an aviary. They still like veggies though but its taken a long time to get them that way. My Ozzie has just turned six but its only the last couple of years that he has been eatig veg. Its not impossible to get them to eat and enjoy vegetables but it does take time x
