Next Sunday is Mothers' Day here in Australia. I had the privilege to be present when my 13 year old delivered this speech at a whole school "Mothers' Day" assembly last week. I certainly got very lucky when it came to my children. And I couldn't be more proud.
“Mum was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is as sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love”. Good morning Brother Bill, staff, students and special guests. The quote I just read, from the famous Stevie Wonder is, in my opinion, something we can all relate to. “Mum was my greatest teacher”: Mothers have always taught us the difference between wrong and right, to think before we act. “A teacher of compassion”: to never leave anyone behind, to help people up when they fall down and to not criticize because of pigment, race or gender. “A teacher of love, and fearlessness”: to stand up for what is right, to speak out if something is unfair or if someone is being discriminated against, and to show them love, and get them back on their feet.
“If love is as sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love”: A complete summary of what mothers are all about ….but different flowers can have different symbolic meanings which align appropriately with what I regard as the virtues of motherhood. Roses, in their various colours, represent purity and beauty; passion and love; grace and happiness, and thankfulness. There are also other types of flowers, like Tulips, which represent undying love and calla lilies, which represent elegance, beauty, grace and charm. Also appropriate to today’s assembly and providing a message that all sons should convey to their mothers, a pink carnation is the flower for Mother's Day, symbolising 'always on my mind'.
The kindness shown from our mums has no doubt radiated onto all of us, shaping us to who we are today. While only having one parent earning an income to support my family, this may have meant going without things at times. This is because mum gave up a paid career to take up a new one which was full-time nurturing and caring for us, and to always be by our side. In this way, mum has had a huge impact on my life, not only at home, but at school too, and I can’t imagine a life without her.
Although some countries spell mum with an “o”, while the rest of the English speaking world spell it with a u, it really doesn’t matter. Almost everywhere around the world, a mother is the same thing - a teacher- a teacher to point us in the right direction, to let us learn from our mistakes, to help us make the difficult decisions, but more importantly, to love, and care for us. And for all these things, I would like to say thank you.
So to all the mothers out there, happy (Aussie) Mothers' Day. ( rachel is the only other aussie mum on here that I know of.)
