Great idea - I do hope you can keep them.
Why is an ioniser bad for budgies? I have a filter that I use in spring for the pollen (I get terrible hay fever) and it has an ioniser. I haven't had it out this year as with the cold and wet weather it hasn't been as bad as usual and I have been able to keep doors and windows closed because the house hasn't been getting that hot. I cannot remember if I use the ioniser part normally, but would never have known to switch it off had I not read this.

I myself am not sure why they are bad but its what i picked up on along the way....i have just come across this though-
Ionizing filtration systems for human/land applications are actually bad and consumer reports did a very detailed write up on it a few years back and the adverse affects it had on humans. The heavier particles created by these ionizing filters are bad for people and birds. You do not want a filter with Ozone....OZONE is harmful and irritating to the respiratory tract.
You do not want one with an Ionizer. The major concern is that the Ionizer weighs down the dust particle, and if the dust particle contains a micro bacterial organism on it, it can be inhaled, and then stuck to the respiratory wall thus leading to Aspergillosis.

Got it. I don't want anything sticking to my respiratory wall thank you. Will make double sure I turn OFF the ionising bit when I use my filter.

Are these filters noisy, and do the reduce the dust on the furniture? With the budgies and an African grey that both have dusty feathers I am always dusting and it get on my nerves.

Some can be more noisy than others, so check reviews from each purifier that you research. Ours isn't too bad, but then our four birds drown it out! So no doubt if you have an african grey as well as your buds they should achieve the desired affect! I would also like to point out that our purifier has three settings and there is not much difference in the noise with each setting, but we keep it on full power for maximum effeciency. As for the furniture, you still might get a little depending on where your purifier is placed, but I am always hoovering everywhere including the furniture anyway. I wouldn't mind but that has a HEPA filter as well!!!
