Hi there
Is it OK to use iodine block as well as feeding my new baby budgie (arriving next week) Trill seed which has added iodine? Don't want to give him/her too much. Also is cuttlefish necessary?
Thanks
Linda

Hi Linda,
New baby budgie - how exciting!
I always have iodine blocks and cuttlebone available and I assume the buds just take what they need. I think most people are the same.

Many thanks. You have put my mind at rest. I can't wait to get 'hopefully him' next week. He is hand tame so hope he will remain so.

Thanks Linda Hi Linda, and welcome. The answer to your first question - perfectly okay. Your budgie will take what s/he needs. We recommend iodine blocks and cuttlefish bone are always available. You may go months without seeing the bird touch either but then again .......... you don't know when they need them .... it is something they regulate on their own.

Thanks Nina for the welcome. Can't wait to get my budgie - hoping he's a boy - but who knows they can change in a few weeks. Will be on this site often for advice.

ROPE TOYS
I have a Trixie cage toy with thick white cotton rope hanging down. It is well secured. I have read horror stories of budgies eating and swallowing the rope, being strangled and other gruesome endings. Makes me feel like taking everything out - and I haven't even got my budgie yet. Only expected next week. Is this is a genuine concern?

There does seem to be a feeling that budgies and rope/twine etc is not a great idea. It seems to depend on the bird tho - some are nibblers and so stuff like this is an ingestion hazard, others don't seem to do this. The physical hazard relates to the length of rope or loops. If the rope is short and has no loops I would imagine it would be reasonably safe. See what others think.

Cut the tassel of the rope toy as short as you are able to. Usually they are knotted, and the rest allowed to hang, so if you put a cable tie around the strands and pull as tightly as you can, this gives the knot a greater level of stability. Once you have the cable tie in place, cut of the strands to about an inch in length. Shorter if you can.
Some birds will have a chew on anything, so you will just have to keep an eye on your budgie and make sure it isn't chewing on the cotton.

I don't like rope on anything. Aside from the chance of them getting tangled in the fibres, if they do decide to eat it you can potentially have a very sick or dead bird on your hands. I'm speaking from experience on this.
I still use untreated sisal for a boing. It seems that's not edible, at least in my case. Or maybe it comes off in chunks, rather than edible little pieces they can swallow.
If they chew the rope, and it breaks down into little bits that they can swallow, it forms a ball of nastiness that blocks and putrefies at various points in their stomach and intestines.
Might not happen. But it happened to my bird.

Brilliant information. I will be removing the rope part of the toy and just leaving the other wooden bits and bobs. Many thanks all of you. Linda.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome to the 'madhouse'. I will be bragging with the new baby buddy in a few days time. Then it's trying to choose a name and confirming whether it's a boy or girl!!
