Does that feeder attach to the side of the cage Hezz? I've seen similar but they hang from the top of the cage. I'm not sure Melman would put his head in that one though never mind his bum Wow, Smudge has really gorgeous colouring!

I try to blow the husks out over the bin ffiscool but it doesn't exactly happen the way I plan I've even made a mess blowing them into the wheelie bin!

Go for it, Joey! Don't get me started on bad design. It is incredible how many products there are out there that have ONLY ONE VERY SIMPLE function that don't do the job properly. The feeders that come with the Ferplast Piano 6 are far too deep. I have modified them to look like this. It is still a bit of a fiddle but I am trying to get the buds to eat out of them rather than open dishes which they spill most of the food from. That's genius birdguhl!! It's a nice looking dish too, shame it's deep enough to feed an emu!

Emu - yes! Perhaps even an emu would have a job to reach the bottom, never mind a wee bud! Thanks. I knew I needed to fill most of it up with something harmless but I have to credit Hezz for the suggestion of using grit to raise the level. The buds have had spells of using it but then they seem to go off it and will only eat from open dishes. This will make me try insisting on this arrangement again.

I worry about their feet too chicklett. Melman perches on the side of the bowl for hours at a time and his wee feet look so uncomfortable. One of the silo feeders would be so much better.

I have a feeling my pair won't be too happy if I change from open dishes!

It has a large plastic washer and nut that screws on from the outside of the cage, with the attached bolt threading through from the inside. It means you need two hands to do the job - one holding the feeder on the inside, and the other to put on the washer and do up the nut on the outside. I have to get someone to help me with it as my cage is too big for me to get my arms around.

i prefer the ones that attach to the cage rather than hang from the top and I like that it has a perch round the outside.. The only problem would be getting Melman to put his head inside..
If I do change from an open bowl, would they eventually eat from the new one when they got hungry enough? I don't want them to starve just because I don't want to waste seed!

I doubt they would starve Nettles. I have changed Joey's three times now and he found the seed in no time. The original feeder that I had was on another cage and involved him putting his head inside. He was a tad nervous to start with but soon settled in. Then I got the stainless steel bowl and now the silo type. So I wouldn't worry abut them starving.

I did actually get ours from our local pet food shop nettles, but I have a list here that may help where you can get them online: www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=silo+bird+feeder&tbm=shop&tbs=vw:l,p_ord:p They also happen to fit all cages - with horizontal and vertical bars AND if you have a square 1cmx1cm mesh on an aviary too. Someone did ask about these before but I cant remember who it was. But if I find the thread I shall show it to you as I pictured how it all fits together

samwiseg, how do you top up seed in these? I am guessing the feeder stays where it is & you open the top & pour fresh seed in? Is that right?? And to clean you would unscrew & take out the whole thing, inside & outside parts? I like the fact that they take up less inside cage space so that means more space for putting perches & toys.

That is exactly right sweetpea - there is a little plastic bung that sits in the clear plastic tube (the tube is housed outside of the cage) so you dont even have to put your hand in the cage to top up! Only the coloured section of the feeder is put inside the cage. You also dont need to unscrew anything either - on top of the clear tube bung there is a "open" marker so when you twist the tube you know when it is open or shut. That way you can twist the clear plastic tube outside of the cage to shut it and then unhinge the coloured plastic bit inside to clean it. I hope that makes sense!

Not entirely sure about your second paragraph but I get the gist of it - you don't need to unscrew, just unhinge to clean. I am very tempted to try one out.

As long as I know they'll not go hungry, im definitely changing to the one samwiseg has suggested. Is Joey liking it so far?
