Hi Tanja. Greetings from New York. My budgie existence started when a little yellow bird found my fire escape in Manhattan, and the next thing I knew I had a rescue bird. That was in late July. Since then I have learned a few things. The birds will be fine with the mesh flooring, but paper towels are just fine and easiest to discard on a weekly or daily basis (depending on your setup). I don't just keep paper on the floor, as the bird will destroy the paper and play in her poop, essentially. I've had more luck with the mesh protecting the paper. Nobody I know is recommending sand paper. I do have one cement perch outside of the cage, which she loves. Otherwise, I just keep perches of varying materials (finished wood, unfinished wood, branches, plastic, and so forth). My bird seems to detest ropes, so that's been out. She loves (adores) her trapeze perch. She sleeps there. Varied toys (many, many which can rotate) are essential. Otherwise, the bird(s) will teach you what's needed. It looks from the picture that you have a great start. Be sure to get your out-of-cage play gym too.

That seems very expensive for trill as it is plus postage. Have you looked on Amazon if your pet shops don't sell it?

Thank you so much GoldieNYC, that's such a cute story how you came to your budgie! Yeah I wasn't really sure if I should add the meshing in the bottom, since it takes away a little bit of the space. But you are probably right, that otherwise the bird would destroy the paper. Hmm good point will add the meshing again to the cage! I plan on getting a little play gym for outside the cage soon!
ffiscool, Yes I looked all over the internet. Ebay, Amazon and also the Online shops of Petco and Petsmart, but nobody seems to sell Trill. Maybe I need to check a store that only sells birds and bird food. BTW. what should Trill cost, because you said it seems to be very expensive. Since it's plus the shipping?

wow that's crazy... I mean that is 2.70 US Dollar if Google is correct with the conversion... And I need to pay more then $6.00 ? There must be another seed mix, that is exactly like that, but can be bought normal instead of online. Just need to find it.

Here in the East, Petco and Petland seem pretty well-equipped. One may be able to simply order it for you. Glad to help!

Hens are more likely to be chewers. A boy budgie may not even look twice at the paper. Just do what works for you. It's sort of trial and error with these little details.
You can use paper towels, kraft paper that you get on rolls, newsprint. Whatever you've got or is easy for you. Above the grate means you never or rarely have to clean the grate. Below means they can't get at the paper. Just try it and see.
Sandpaper isn't good, for lining or perches. Neither are those happy huts. American stores seem to sell a lot of this stuff, but it's really not good or safe for them. Sandpaper can cause bumble foot - painful sores under their feet which can get infected and potentially become dangerous. Happy huts have caused a number of deaths. They either eat the fibre becoming ill, or get caught up in loose threads.
You've got a wonderful choice of stores and online bird stores to choose from where you are. Way more than we have. I'll just hunt down a few for you and post them up.

US and Canadian online stores that put parrot safety and enrichment first. The woman who runs these two is Doris. She's really nice. She's in Canada but postage is pretty reasonable I think. The first one is her stainless steel toy shop. Her husband makes all the toys. The second is her organic parrot food store - more for larger parrots, but if you're interested shoot her an email. She's very helpful. www.avianstainless.comavianorganics.comHere's a US one. They've got heaps of everything. I got my stainless food skewers and a few other bits from them ages ago. It was cheaper buying from them even with postage to Australia. www.mysafebirdstore.com/Products-SKEWERS_TOY_EXTENDERS.htmlThis Canadian one has amazing perch choices, if you can't make or get them. She sells all sorts of stuff. www.thingsforwings.ca/About-Us_ep_7.html

wow thank you very much stace! This is amazing, I will surely use these online shops! Yeah in our local shops they have a lot of sand perches and the papers. Well I will try it with the paper towels and see how that works out! I also saw these happy huts. It's crazy that they are allowed to sell these things, if birds actually died because of these...
I also need to check further if there are bird dedicated stores that carry budgies. Probably much better to get one there instead of Petco and co. But I am not sure. As soon I go out for a budgie baby, I will take a look on all stores I can find in my area.

Well that's it, I can't buy Trill... As it would take them 18-26 business days to ship it to my address!!! I mean where the hell is it coming from? On Amazon I can't see where it will be shipped from. If I want to get it in 1-3 days I need to pay $61, I guess I really need to buy an other seed mix, that is good for budgies.

Yeah that is an amazing website. Thank you for posting the link, I bookmarked it. :-) I agree it's quite subtle. I think the easiest would be to see female and male right beside each other. Otherwise they look really the same. Or I know what. I go to the stores and if I really like a bird I will take a photo and show it here.
