glad you are both settling in! any move is stressful, so it is great you are doing well. And Brodie!
I would love to be in a budgie's head at times, am sure it is all logical to them!

Well sounds like the move has gotten the thumbs-up from Brodie, at any rate! It sounds like he is having a ball. Hopefully too you will be able to shrug off some of the down turn and find yourself being at the point you wanted this all to be ...... more independent. I really hope it does work out for you. Have you come to any conclusions regarding the cages yet?

Brodie seems utterly delighted being here! Not sure he's keen on the earlier nights mind. I cover him up but leave the light on for 10minutes or so then switch it off, but there's lots of chirruping & bell ringing before he settles down! He's got bolder too, investigating things he shouldn't be & today I 'lost' him, he was on his play gym which I hadn't got out for him at that point, so he was sitting on it on a table in the corner, took me a while to locate him! I'm thinking of trying the Hagen small cage, hopefully will order next week, just to see & if it's too heavy, I can send it back. I didn't know those elasticacted skirts still existed but I'm guessing they're a pain to get off. I can try the cage anyway & see, it may not go down well with B, we can experiment!

Just check that they will take it back before you order it. Good luck.

I think the elasticated things only work if the cage is on a stand where the base is free, like hanging up. That way the seed and feathers can get inside it. Does that make any sense?

So, the cage has arrived & been assembled & Brodie has had a tentative look at it. It does look rather small - although it's the same dimensions as his old one the longest measurement is in the height rather than the length but hopefully as he's allowed out most of the day it won't be an issue. We'll give it a go anyway. A couple of questions: is it possible to make it so the doors create a landing platform outside the cage rather than in (opening horizontally inwards will interfere with perches but outwards they would create more space to play), OP For some reason I think you may have done something like this? Also, skysmum where did you find a flat bottomed water bottle? I'd much prefer to use one of them as I'm not always very coordinated & fear water spillage would be frequent using the bottom troughs! We did used to have a flat water bottle but it broke. Thanks everyone for all your help!

Turning the doors around is a quite simple task if you are any good with pliers. It wasn't my idea originally, I forget who mentioned doing it. I\f you do turn the doors around you will also need to turn the plastic catches around as well. I'm sure both you and Brodie will enjoy the cage.

This is the drinker i use, it is flatter than most and i still had to bend the bars a little. Im sorry i dont know where you can get one as they came with one of my other cages. Good tip with the doors OP, i find them a pain if they open inwards because it makes placing perches difficult.

@op how do you turn the catches round? We thought we'd need to do that but weren't sure how! I did read somewhere on here though how someone used a rope perch underneath the doors to hold them level & I guess that's an option. Having slept on it & done more measuring I've decided to send the small one back & get the medium. By changing the dimensions so the longest measurement is in height rather than length, Brodie will actually lose over 10cm of the length from his previous cage & even though he's out most of the day, I feel that's too much. If the medium is too heavy for me, I'll just have to change where/ how I clean him out. I'm just hoping the smaller cage can be easily dismantled so it can be sent back....(my dad's not going to be thrilled about that!).

The rope perch certainly is an option. I did turn my doors back the right way round as Joey (being different) didn't like stepping on the doors. Turning the catches round is quite simple. Just force the catch to one side and you can then take it out of the door and turn it round. Slide it back to the middle when you have it in place. Dismantling should be as easy as assembly, if you assembled it and have not thrown away the instructions. In any case it is done quite logical. As for lifting, I carry the whole cage with Joey inside from the living room to the conservatory with no problem. The hand holes at the side are a boon for this. Cleaning the base is just as easy for me, I undo the catches at the side and use the handles at the top to lift the cage and Joey off the base. Put him down on a table while I vac and disinfect the base. I hope your dad will understand.

Ah, good old Joey does like to be different doesn't he? How is he these days? Not heard much about him recently but then I've been a bit sporadic in catching up on here recently. Yes, I've got all the paperwork for the cage. Having tried the small one I do like the handles at the bottom, it makes it feel more stable than when carrying it to the kitchen. My dad will understand, he's in Leeds till weds so he has a few days to come round.... And thanks for the tips re the clip!

Thank you for asking about Joey. He has quietened down to what he was in the beginning. I now put him in his cage in the conservatory through the day so he gets plenty of natural light. I open the cage doors, put his (still unfinished) play gym on top of the cage. I have been busy myself outside at the back of the house so Joey has had the free run of the place. He just sits on the play gym as and when he wants to. I have bought him some basil, mint and coriander in plant form. I have them growing in the conservatory and I am trying to get him interested. No luck so far. At least it smells nice in there. I just today put some of each in a small pyrex dish with water and put it on top of the cage. I can keep doing that in the hope he will try it one day.
