Has anyone any experience of Hagen Vision small cages (for a single budgie)? Do they retain much of the mess as advertised? Brodie & I have hopefully moved out into our own flat (it's an experiment, we've managed 8days so far!). I can do small, daily clean outs but not a full wash out (my mum does them weekly) & I use a small handheld 'Dustbuster' once a day to suck up the seed & feather mess around the room. However I can't do anymore nor use a Hoover due to ill health & the mess seems to go everywhere. I wondered if getting a Hagen would be a worthwhile investment. Any advice gratefully received, thanks!

I have the medium one for my single bud and my conure. The conure used to make so much mess it was ridiculous but the cage has almost stopped all of that. The same goes for Echo. I put newspaper on the bottom, up to the food bowls, leaving a gap at each end so most of the feathers go underneath and stops them flying all over the place when he flaps. I'd definitely recommend them.

I've only had Kenny since Saturday but have the single height hagen vision in medium I out 7layers of newspaper down and when I've changed his seed on a morning just pop my hand in seed door and pull out the top layer folding as I go this stops me startling Kenny! He has no problems going down to the floor to eat (this is what he did with breeder anyways and there has been no seed on my floor yet only a little bit of millet crumbs as that was hooked up to side of cage! I'm very happy with the vision but have no other experience as Kenny is my first budgie x

I have had all 3 hagen vision cages and they have all kept the mess inside the cage-i would not buy the very small one though as it is VERY VERY small for one budgie,i only got it for when i had Meeko in quarantine and now keep it if i need it for a hospital cage...The single storey MEDIUM one would be perfect for a single Bud and should help keeping the mess at bay

I have the hagen vision medium and find that hardly any mess escapes even with layers of newspaper over the bottom grid most of it still finds its way to the bottom.A great cage as far as Im concerned.

Im sorry if i seem to be the only one with negative points to mention about this cage but, i have the medium Hagen and it really is great for keeping down the mess, BUT. The down side to them is, that you have to unclip and lift the whole top of the cage off to clean the bottom, i have slide out draws on my others which is easier and can be done in situ. The other thing i have found is that it is hard to attach tube feeders and water containers as i don't like using the floor level one's, also i have found that while the double doors are good it makes arranging the cage quite difficult. Sorry, prob just me being me and there are down sides to everything but as other people have said it does keep the mess to a minimum , just thinking if you have trouble lifting while the small one would be ok the medium may seem more awkward. Just a thought.

Thanks for all the comments, very helpful. Yes, skysmum, the sizing is certainly a factor to consider. The small one is 45.7 CM x 35.6 CM x 50.8 CM which is actually very slightly, larger than what he has at the moment so I thought it would be suitable? Here is what he has at the moment:

I think the small would be more manageable for you starrymist. Just to note the bars all run the other way so water tubes and feeders are difficult to squeeze in, i have to use internal feeders that bolt to the side and have managed to find a tube water feeder with a flat'ish bit at the bottom.

I bought the Savic, will get the name of this particular one. I did try the Hagen but it was too big for my room and I agree re the ease of sliding out the bottom drawer of the Savic.

Is the small one ample size for a budgie? I'd like to think so especially as he has the opportunity to be out for most of the time.

What about getting one of those elasticated things that go around the base of the cage you already have to keep the mess contained?

I was thinking this too, carol62. I have never used one, and have no idea how a budgie would feel about them, lol. It is probably a better solution than a heavier cage for starrymist. I imagine the full plastic bottom of the Hagens would make them rather heavier than a normal cage of the same size. I hope this all works out for you, starrymist, this little experiment. Good luck with it all.

Thanks everyone! And thanks Hezz for your encouragement, so far, so good! It's such a huge step for me & certainly not how I ever thought my 1st taste of independent living would be (- I thought it would be more, well, independent!) but it's good. Parents are in often helping & having had a big dip health wise from the move I'm picking up again & able to do more each day, small steps & everything. And Brodie's fairly enjoying himself, he's just zoomed into & out of the kitchen, chirruping madly 'Look at ME!' I think I'll have to keep the kitchen door shut from now on! He's playing on the rug now, with the occasional step off the rug to see what happens before quickly dashing back to the centre of the rug. Budgies can be so silly sometimes!
