On Sunday 16th feb (2014) I bought 3 baby budgies from a breeder, he put their ages at 6/8 weeks. They seemed lively enough in the cages with the other birds, and were eating ok (food was on the floor) my concern was that 2 of the babies seemed to have very short wing and tail feathers, which I asked the breeder about, he said they would grow as they got older it was because they were young, not wanting to break up what seemed like a happy wee bunch, I bought all 3. I have now had them almost 2 weeks, and they are not able to fly at all, pulling themselves up from the bottom of the cage by their beaks, they are eating ok, but all they seem to do is eat and sleep. I have searched the forum and the Internet, and discovered from other comments, that they have french moult. This morning I decided to call the breeder to see what he said, I have left messages and so far have had no return call. Any advice would be appreciated as to what to do next. My last budgie Charlie died last August aged 2 years 3 months, and I had continual trips to the vet with him, when he died i was heartbroken, I don't want to keep these 3 babies and go through the same heartache again.

Hi starlingqueen, I'm new to the forum, and don't have a clue how to post pictures You have to open a photo hosting account. I use photobucket. You then upload your pictures and use the code provided and post it here.

To upload photos, follow this:
Leave this web site open on this page. Open a new web browser page and search for Photobucket. Register an account with them, it's free, and then do the following.
Upload your photo to photobucket. If you need to you can edit the photo to make it bigger or smaller. Save the image, you'll see that it says SAVE. On the right hand side of the page it says "Links to share this photo" just left click the bottom option once. Go back to this site and start your post, and when you want to put the photo in, just press CTRL and V and it will drop text into the thread, but when you submit it, it will show the photo.

I hope you get in contact with him.
If not, try to find out the local budgerigar society number and tell them about him.
If he is a breeder, he would have known about the issues with chicks.

Totally agree with BB ...... a breeder will have known something wasn't right. There are simply too many of these stories we are reading about lately. It is not good enough. These breeders need to be named and shamed!

Do your birds have leg rings on? The breeder's number will be on there, then search for the breeder on the Budgerigar Society as it could be that he wasn't the actual breeder, but had bought these himself, and then sells them on. You don't want to start naming breeders just in case it wasn't him.

Sorry folks, been trying for ages now as to how to post pictures through photobucket, to allow you to see my birds with suspected french moult, afraid I'm not very good at that type of thing, but I'm hoping that this link might show a picture. Fingers crossed, if not I don't know what else to do.

They do look like they have some sort of feather disease but they also look like they have had their wings clipped very short or they just haven't grown. They don't seem to have much tail either. My FM has wing feathers but they are very narrow and his wings are small too. He has a similar tail to yours. Here is Titch, my FM, the middle one. You can see how his wings are small and the gap between them is wider than normal. He's also a lot smaller than the other birds.
