Sometimes I manage to find a cage layout that I like, but then when I try to change things around every once in a while I just can't get anything satisfactory! Currently I have 3 half length perches, one flat perch and two thicker perches making a double swing. Oh, and one of the plastic swings that came with the cage, despite Munchy never using it. I need one of the straight perches sticking into the middle of the cage from the side door so that Munchy can get in and out easily, and the sleeping perch normally remains in place... The current layout just looks wrong. Munchy doesn't help by not flying in his cage. He'll only hop a certain distance, so he's having to climb the bars to get around the cage at the moment. Generally, he does this a bit anyway... The cage is about 50x35x40cm (LxWxH) Anyone got any ideas about how I can arrange the perches to allow him to hop between them properly? I think part of the problem is that I really want to get him a bigger cage (partly just so I can change things around more easily! )

Fundamental problem there, Zoe ........ we don't know how far Munchy can hop. I think this is a problem you are going to have to sort yourselves. I leave mine with a fairly basic set-up that allows maximum flying space but easy access across and top-to-bottom, bottom-to-top, with toys in the otherwise unused corners. Sorry.

He could hop further than he does, I'm sure...
No worries, Hezz. I keep thinking up ideas, then realise things will get in my way... The tiny door doesn't help.
I shall see what I can do.

Im actually experiencing the same problem- just on a larger scale The aviary is due for another clean out and renovation soon, and with it comes the drama of finding a good layout for the perches.

Good layouts require a lot of architectural and ergonomic thought. Especially with minimal space. Moving things a few centimetres this way, then a few more bars up to ensure all items can be accessed from the perches. And also getting into all sort of contortions trying to fix things onto the far ends of the cage with my face all mushed up hard against the wires.
Sometimes I think I've got it right, then Boo tries out it and looks at me to say, "How do ever expect me to reach that, you nong. Put it back the way it was!"

It's amazing how much difference a few centimetres makes!!! Boo is so gorgeous and wonderful! He just demands the same of his cage I've settled on a new layout, just in time to go out to see Wicked

Only advice I can give is I have sections within the cage - feeding and drinking area, sleep area, play area and flying area (if that makes any sense)?!

Lol, nongs I can't remember if I've heard anyone say that. Possibly, but only once or twice. Flight area, samwiseg!!! I try, but that gets ruled out. Only time Munchy spreads his wings in there is when I'm trying to catch him or something startles him. He's decided he wants to sleep on his swing, so I'm going to have to move the water to the other side of the cage so that I can actually remove it before he's ready to wake up...

Layout has finally been decided now that food and water have been moved away from the swing. Looking forward to finishing all this uni work so that I can give everything a really good scrub every week though.
