Our young Budgie has been holding up her left leg on and off since yesterday evening, I have had her out and looked at it while holding her but there is nothing untoward on the leg or foot and everything looks normal. I wondered if they do this sometimes or maybe she has strained it? She doesn't appear unwell and they have natural branches of all sizes in their cage. She is using it most of the time but when she rests she's putting it up close to her body. Any advice appreciated. Thanks. x

many budgies do this normally when at rest, tucking their leg and claw into their body. Some sleep like this. It gives their leg muscles and tendons a rest. There is the possibility she may have hurt it somehow too. Is she walking on it okay?

Thanks for replying. Yeah she is walking and landing on it fine. She is doing exactly as you describe, tucking her leg and claw into her body when she rests. She's quite an active bird and it wouldn't surprise me if she's pulled a muscle as she has been hanging off the sides of the cage and crunching the hell out of the cuttlefish for days . Will keep an eye on her. Thanks x

She sounds okay from your description. Maybe just a little bang or something. Just keep an eye as you've said.

A budgie who rests on one leg is a healthy bird. Perfectly normal.

It sounds to me as if this is perfectly normal. I've seen a budgie with a sore foot and it was very obvious that he was in pain when he tried to put it down or land on it. You would know if that was the case because your budgie would be very cautious with the foot, wincing when he tried to put it down and landing awkwardly. My budgie tucks a foot up all the time when he's resting or sleeping. So don't worry unless your budgie also seems to be uncomfortable and in pain.

Bailey often will hold up his foot for a long time... often the one more than the other, but as above, just resting it, after all, they are on their feet so much. Bailey has a flat perch, but does he use it to rest both feet.. no, don't be silly, lol

Yes, it's normal as long as the budgie doesn't look in any discomfort.

I have changed the thread heading so the information can be found easily in future searches.

Well, coincidentally, my bird just got his foot trapped in his cage somehow this morning. Either in the wires or between the wires and his food bowl. He was screaming blue murder. By the time I got there, only a few seconds later, he had managed to struggle free. What a commotion.
He is now holding his foot up inside his feathers too. Fortunately he doesn't appear to have done any major damage. I think it is just hurting a bit.

Yes. Made my heart race for a while there. He's okay, but feeling a bit sorry for himself. I don't know exactly where his foot got stuck, or if it was his foot, leg or claw. He's favouring his other foot at the moment.

Thanks everyone. She's been doing it a bit today but I have had her out again and looked at it closely but there isn't anything sore or injured on the bird. She has been paying attention to the new cuttlefish I put in the cage this week and has spent hours just hanging on to the side of the cage grinding the hell out of it and making lots of mess in the process so I wouldn't be surprised if she's pulled a muscle etc Thanks x
