Hi, I have noticed scales on the legs and beak of my budgie, which haven't shown any noticeable difference in the last one month. Should it be a cause if concern? The photos of the budgie are posted. Any advice would be much appreciated.

We can't see the pictures. You have to upload them to a site like photo bucket then post the link here.

I think you are right and you need to treat both birds as it is infectious.

Thanks Starlingqueen for your reply. What are my options on treatment, I live in Harrow? Also are these mites harmful to humans? I am concerned that my kid feeds them on his hands!!

hi Dee... I am not that far from you, and there is a good vet with great Avian interest in Eastcote.. Stan at the goddard group on the main road there - so not far at all.. if it is just the drops you need (Ivermectin 0.1%), you can also get them online and if you are able to, would put them on the back of the budgies' necks... if you aren't, then I would go to the vets, which I did at the beginning with Bailey to make sure it went on properly...
others on here will know what other things you need to do or if Ivermectin isnt the main thing for scaley face etc...

Looks like a typical case of scaly. Treat all the bird, including others which don't have this visible, as well as clean and disinfect all perches, toys, cage etc.

Ivermectin 0.1% is the treatment of choice for scaly mites. I have not heard of them being a problem for humans.

Thanks all for your helpful comments. Any idea how much the treatment by vet would cost? I have 3 budgies, I guess all of them have to be treated although one of them show signs of scales.

No, it's not a human parasite. They don't survive on us. However, it does spread between birds. As the others have said, you need to treat ALL the birds straight away with the small bird dose 0.1% ivermectin, plus disinfect cage, toys and everything the birds come into contact with over the course of the treatment. In the UK, this med is available for purchase online. You've caught it before it gets too bad, so as long you treat them, they'll be fine.

I think quite cheap if you buy online... and then if you are able to do it yourself, thats that.. and then just the cost of the drops.. you would do one drop on each, at the back of the neck so it goes onto the skin, for 3 weeks, once a week.. I am only basing that on Bailey - as we didnt know if he did have them or not.
if you cannot do it, I reckon the initial vet cost would be £25.. and you would only need to take the 1 and be shown how to do it etc - if you need to see.. then try and do it yourself after that?
