For Lilly Recently, whenever Lilly has pooped, instead of it going straight down, it has hit her tail on the way, meaning that after a day her tail is covered in poo. I don't understand how the poo is hitting the tail? Also, it isn't the poo of a healthy bird, it's yellowish when wiped and it's wet and slighty green when fresh . Also her bottom looks swollen to me. I hate her feeling so uncomfortable she even looks more fluffed up than usual. She is healthy besides this, she eats, drinks, flys around and eats her veggies. But I don't know what to do to fix this problem.....is her tail to much forward, why is her bottom swollen? I need help, my baby girl is sick

I can’t say what is causing this, so I will give you general advice.
Firstly, you need to separate the bird from others and provide heat, until you are sure that everything is fine. Remove all other food except seed (sterilized if possible) and water.
Keep cleaning the poop with warm water and a soft cloth. Pulling the feathers to show the skin in that area would help in keeping the area clean. Cutting is not good, dangerous and won’t serve the purpose of keeping the area clean. Pulling the feathers sounds harsh but it necessary because birds feel uncomfortable and try to clean the area and end up licking the poop. But it should only be done if one knows what he is doing. It should be avoided if the area in already red or swollen. You can also apply some bird safe gel.
As for the reasons of this problem, it can be countless. She may be just in breeding condition and have reproductive issues. It can also be an indication of some illness or parasites. Or it can be malnutrition like calcium or other nutritional problems. A intestine or diarrhea issue. At worst it can be an internal tumor. The wrong direction of the droppings can be caused by the swelling of the vent area.
The examination of bird droppings, further diagnosis and it’s appropriate treatment is quite costly, but available in Australia.

Should she also stop the fresh foods for a while too BudgiesBuddy whilst a prognosis is determined? I do hope little Lilly is alright and gets better real soon x

Yeah, he has said that, Sam - remove all other food except seed.
Nicola, are you able to get hold of some Vetafarm Poly-Aid Plus? This is a bit like Guardian Angel, I am led to believe. I haven't used it, but I remember you saying Vetafarm is right near you. How is Lilly? Also how long since they were all wormed?

Will it help if I get some pictures BB?
Yes vetafarm is only about 10 minutes away, so I should be able to look into it Hezz. And they have never been wormed? I actually didn't know budgies could be? Are worms possibly what's causing it?

Could well be a problem, considering you have brought birdies in from outside semi-regularly. It is recommended you worm twice a year or whenever a new bird is introduced, should be wormed before-hand. If you have ivermecin spot-on to use for scaly mites, you can use this as it works on internal and external parasites. Or you can see about worming liquid when you look for the Poly-Aid. Most wormers are added to their water for a full 24hrs making sure this is the only water they have access to in this time, so no baths, mistings or wet branches etc for the day.

What about vetafarm scaly face treatment? Does that work internally and externally also?

Here's some pictures I got this afternoon. There's a whoppa storm happening at the moment and I was using my iPad so pictures aren't perfect but the problem is pretty obviously seen. She is more fluffed up than usual-however she is naturally a poofy bird so it's not as dramatic as it looks. But you can see where the problem around her tail is. Next time I get her out of the aviary (which will hopefully be tomorrow afternoon) to clean her bottom and tail again, I'll try and get a picture of her vent area to see if anyone else thinks it's swollen. I assuming most know that Lilly is the light green one- as shown in my signature. Thank you in advance P.S. with your advice BB, about separating her from the flock, I'm just thinking about how to tackle mum about that one, so hopefully she will be shortly

She looks like a sick bird to me. The adjustment of the tail position is for balance I suspect. She may be feeling weak and having to lower her tail position to keep her steady.

That's just what I didn't want to hear she's my little girl-I've had her for the longest and as a result we have a special bond together. How can I help her? Should I take her to the vet? Or do what I can at home? Thankyou to everyone. I very much appreciate your input

I'll try my very best to get her an appointment. But we don't have an avian vet? Would a normal vet do?
