Pippin does look like she has FM and is also a definite hen in breeding condition.

Pippin is such a pretty colour. And beautiful even if his feathers don't lie straight. He definitely shares that with Gentleman Jo.

skysmum - I think so too, after seeing your photos of Jo. Yeh, he has a deformed leg, has had it since we got him at 6 weeks old. The vet who saw him when we first got him thought the leg has probably been broken when he was a very young chick and has healed awkwardly. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, just means he can't run about as fast as he would like. He has little platforms in his cage too as he likes to chill out and sleep lying down to give the leg a rest.

starlingqueen - Pip is definitely a he. He had a deep blue cere until about 2 years ago when it suddenly developed patches of brown. We took him to an avian vet about it because I had read it can be a sign of serious underlying health issues, but he was fully checked over and given the all clear. It was about a week later that we noticed our other budgie (also a boy) was developing little brown patches on his cere too... Then we saw them both together rubbing their faces on this thick wooden branch perch in their cage. I had just cleaned the perch so it was a bit damp and as they were rubbing the were getting a brown colour on their feathers. We finally put 2 and 2 together and realised that Pippin's cere had started to change colour not long after we first put this wooden perch in the cage lol!

From those pictures it does look like french moult. As you said you already have plenty perches then there is no worry there, just obviously be mindful when they come out , mine always liked to try and fly every now and then which is when I normally got showered in feathers. Also if not already then keep a little first aid box close by to them, one of my French Moulters would break her blood feathers as they were growing in and I was forever covering her in veterinary wound powder to stop the bleeding.

The fact Pippin is a confirmed hen could explain why the other bird is rough with her. If they are both hens they will fight for dominance.

Bless him, its amazing how they get about with their little deformities, i have a hen who broke her wing years ago and it healed awkward despite veterinary care and she gets about just fine, she is very fast at running too . Jo has a couple of platforms too, he has been stretched out in the sun today with his little legs out behind him .
