A few times this past week I have noticed that the water bottle level has gone down more than normal. I have checked it for leaks by placing a piece of kitchen towel around the base and it remains dry. The only solution is that Joey is drinking it. Can they drink too much? If he is drinking excessive could it point to a problem?

It could be he is just feeling the heat. It's been a bit warmer here lately.

I thought that, but he has done it when it has not been really hot. Thank you for the suggestion.

It could be a sign of kidney problems. But I wouldn't start panicking just yet. Keep an eye on him and see if he is acting differently, are his droppings normal, all the usual things we look for in a healthy bird. I could be he is just not eating as much veg as usual, I know e doesn't eat much but even a small amount makes a difference to their water consumption.

I have been wondering about the kidneys. However he is not consistently drinking a lot of water. I notice it because I change it every day and can gauge the amount by the distance between cage bars. It usually is about half the distance between two bars, but a few times especially this last week it has been the full distance between two bars. The only greens he eats, so far, is the millet grass that I have been growing. His droppings are never the same from day to day, they never have been. But I wouldn't say they have been abnormal comparing the posts on the subject. I will certainly be keeping a close eye on him. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Bailey goes through phases where he drinks loads and then seemingly notice. I think with him, it's if he hasn't had much the day before, then he drinks lots the next day.whilst not hot, is it possible any has been evaporating? I have a ceramic that hangs over the rad, I fill it up and some days, with no obvious reason it goes down loads

If it was evaporating it would do mostly when it was hot, but this goes down when it isn't hot. He is drinking it. He doesn't do it everyday. I just thought I would ask to see if anyone comes in and says 'Oh my bud does that'.

It could be a problem as SQ has mentioned but if his attitude hasn't changed, and everything else about him is normal I wouldn't get too worried.

The only thing about him that has changed is he has become more vocal, as in chuntering to himself. It seems like he has been with me forever now. It is 1 year ago yesterday when I brought him home. He has gone from a very timid budgie to a fairly confident one. I am still taking notice of the amount he is drinking, and I don't think it is really excessive otherwise he would be at the water far more than I seem there. Thank you for the thoughts though.

He just needed to wet his whistle! Seriously though, welcome to a year of budgie ownership. May there be many, many more to come.

Late contribution here, OP, but I have had times when I have noticed Luee and Berry spending longer at the drinker, perhaps taking 3 or 4 sips, and sometimes just the one quick sip. I am not so conscious of this with Woody and Charlie, but they more often have a bath available so it is harder to gauge what they are drinking.
It sounds as if Joey is in great form. May I add my congratulations to a year of you two as a team and both of you keeping us entertained & informed on here. Any thoughts of resuming your blog, Joey...?

Thank you for the congratulations Birdguhl. I think it may be the weather that has had him drinking a bit more. Joey is in great form which is better than I am. That's enough of that though. As for restarting the blog, he has settled down to a less adventurous life now, so the blog would be rather mundane for all to read. I will be writing about his adventures as I'm sure there will be some to follow. Hopefully they will be as entertaining as ever. Of course I will copy excerpts from the blog that I started on my own computer as I don't want to take the interest away from here. But if you or anyone wishes to pay me a visit and leave a nice comment you are more than welcome.

More temperature (body or surrounding) = more water
