For any, and everyone who has been following Spyro's journey through his broken leg, I am happy to report that everything is moving on well. I have seen him use both legs to give himself a head scratch, so balance on the broken leg is sorting itself out; he has been climbing about all over the cage, even hanging onto, and balancing on, a very slender piece of kitchen string. When he is jumping about and just doing the things a budgie does without thinking about it all, the toes seem to work okay but they don't hold for a long time. The fact that he is using them normally to any extent gives me hope that they will eventually loosen up enough to not be a problem at all. As yet he is not able to curl the toes up into his feathers as he would normally when giving that leg a rest, but hey, it is only 9 days since he had the plaster off. It may never happen, but even if he never progresses beyond where he is now, he is still one very lucky budgie. I have started giving him company again as well. First day was not so good, but since then he has moved right back to the stage he was at before this all kicked off, in that he is very busy chatting up a storm with Smudge. Today and yesterday he got to spend time in the big cage with the others - I think he liked that. Tomorrow, with cage-cleaning and repositioning open to interpretation, I think he is ready for perches more than just an inch off the floor. Poor boy thinks he is ready for more than that, I am sure, but I will be erring on the side of caution, for a few more weeks yet ............................. To everyone who offered up their best wishes and support over the last few weeks/month, thank you very, very much. It is so good to have somewhere to off-load to, knowing that your friends are going to understand what on earth you are concerned about, to share fears and concerns with .................... xxxxxxx

I am so pleased that Spyro has done so well.
Very well done to you and your vet!
Perhaps she could publicize her procedure to the rest of the vets in the world so that more budgies can be saved if they break their legs!
That would be so fantastic.
p.s. photos please!!

A fantastic vet, and a fantastic Mum who gave Spyro all the love and help he needed, a great combination. Lots of love to you Spyro, you've been one brave little budgie.

Thanks again for all the wonderful thoughts and support. Clean perches for the little man this morning, with one mid-height and quite a skinny little stick as I am hoping the difference in thickness will help his own unintended exercise program. Just seeing the way he tackles everything without favouring the foot at all makes me aware of how much we can learn from nature. No one has told him that his foot is weak, or needs time, or can't hold him up; he gets on and simply uses it. When his body tells him the leg needs a rest, he rests it.
