During a major moult it is quite possible. My budgie Joey went through a similar loss of feathers about 2 months ago. The small fluffy ones are no worry as you say. Looking at the root tip of the other feathers looks like normal shed also. I am not an expert so please wait for someone to come along

I'm not certain how many times they have a major moult, but I don't think it is an annual thing. I believe they have one when they change from chick to teenager and again from teenager to adult. The may appear to have a number of moults in one year, but as I understand it they do not shed all the flight or tail feathers at one go. The will shed some at one side and then when the have grown those back they will shed some at the other side. This is to maintain the capability of flight to escape predators. That would seem that they are moulting a lot, when really there is one moult with stops and starts. I hope you understand what I am saying, it's rather complicated. I'm not the world's best at explaining.

Two to four times a year, with one being major sometimes.

Mine have two major moults a year - one around March and one about ........ NOW!!!!! This is when they lose not only small downy feathers but flight and tail feathers as well. It is perfectly normal for one birds to lose this many and more in one day.

Hezz and am guessing her mood will change when she finished molting? -_- Sometimes she even fight with the paper in the bottom of the cage, or a perch. And don't forget her poor budgie friend (who is like any other male, bears with a grumy female )

And don't forget her poor budgie friend (who is like any other male, bears with a grumy female ) They can become quieter, less active and rather grumpy; some more than others, I have found, regardless of the heaviness of the moult. This time round for me, I have found they are sleeping more in the middle of the day - yesterday all four were in their cage on a different perch with their heads under their wings; quite sweet to see. And yes, two of my hens have been giving the paper on the bottom of the cage a terrible time, even though they do have bark and twigs to chew on. Hopefully your hen will revert to her sweet self once moulting is over.

So frustrating, when my two moult and the pinnies start coming in they spend ages rubbing themselves against the cage bars and perches....why won't they preen each other, I've asked them numerous times but they just don't reply. Ah me .....
