My six year old budgerigar Django has been diagnosed with a bacterial/fungal infection and has been prescribed antibiotics which he takes in his drinking water and Nystan. The vet has advised me to put it on his favourite treats. It started off ok, I mixed it with banana and then toast, but he wised up after a few days.Since then I keep trying different things: I managed to get seven consecutive days of him taking it on small pieces of millet but then he refused it. Because he has not had it consistently he keeps relapsing. I have recently tried it on bits of a honey seed bar which he likes but even this is starting not to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am so worried if i don't get the stuff into him there might be few options left. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have gotten to the stage where you are just going to have to bite the bullet and syringe it into him. Will he eat egg, or eggfood? And have his favourite foods been restricted to only when you need to dose him?

Thanks for your answer. I haven't tried him with egg...i will do that. Does it disguise tastes more or is it just irresistible to budgies? Should |I just give him treats when the medicine is given then? If I do end up having to give it by forceful means, I assume I just try and hold him whilst someone feeds it to him? These little creatures are more intelligent than people give them credit for-I am sure he can read my mind!!

They are very intelligent, parrots, of which, in spite of how others may view them, budgies are a part of. It is definitely easier to dose with two people - one to hold and one to administer. Unfortunately most meds taste pretty awful to us; we can only imagine the birds feel the same. If he is a millet junkie, and you are providing millet most of the time and then try to give him meds with millet ........ well, I know what I would do - turn up my nose at the dosed up millet. If the millet is only available when you have added the meds, allow only this small amount be available firstly, then maybe a small amount when the dosed piece is finished as a little treat. But nothing in between times.
