Receptionist rung back - the avian vet wasn't that helpful and just told me of some random vets to attend - no specific person. Why is it so difficult to find someone willing to help?! No one could see him today who knew about budgies but I could have taken him along which seems pointless and stressful for Minty if they have no idea about budgies. He's started eating some millet spray (yay!) so I am going to get him into my own local vets tomorrow and hopefully if there are any issues they can contact the avian vet via telephone. Seems a nightmare trying to find someone who is willing to help but knows about budgies.

I feel so sorry for you, and the situation you find yourself in, I hope tomorrow you get someone who will be able to help little Minty. Good luck.

Hi Mintysowner, im sorry ive only just caught up with this thread. My instant thought with Minty is that she is a Hen, BUT as Hezz has said cocks can get like this with testicular cancer. The poops don't look good but also remind me of my Hens poops when they are in breeding condition or that of a hen about to lay an egg. The other thing that concerns me is the bald black patch on his/her chest, this can be a sign of a tumour. As Hezz has said i have a 10 year old male bud with a large tumour on his lower abdomen and he has picked the feathers off but his tumour is very noticeable, perhaps your bud's is more internal. It is a very confusing one. I have my Bud on a mixture of Bicarbonate of soda and Apple cider vinegar. In half a ltr of water i put half a teaspoon of Bicarb and ive gradually increased the Apple cider vinegar to 10ml but build this up gradually start with 4ml, i also put half a teaspoon of honey in to begin with to make it taste better but dont use that now, he readily drinks it . His tumour has reduced in size and it is no longer red and angry and he is so much brighter in himself, his poop is now normal. Also as SQ said, keep an eye out incase he is indeed a she and is trying to lay an egg, quite possible at her age and without a male. Good luck, any vet is essential if she is egg bound, let us know. Ps, ive just watched your vid and im afraid he has that familiar D shaped abdomen, i think he could well have a tumour. My Ted has had his for over two years though and is only now becoming a problem to him.

Now this may seem like a really stupid question but .....can hens (or female budgies) lay eggs if there's no male (I've heard some chickens can?) or was someone having me on Yes milliej, hens can lay eggs without a male, they wont be fertile though

Becca, when Minty's cere was blue, was it a bright blue, or a light washed out pale blue? This will help determine whether Minty is hen or cock, and therefore the possibility of an egg. This is not a good photo, but the best I have to indicate colour ....... hen with washed out blue cere: Cock with bright blue cere: Hen on the left, cock on the right: Keep the millet up to him; they find millet easier to get to than regular seed, so less effort required when when they are feeling poorly. Good luck with the vets. If you have some earlier photos of Minty's cere that could be helpful as well for the same reasons I mentioned above.

I just want to thank you all so much for all of your replies and support. I'm really so sad to have to tell you that Minty had to be put to sleep an hour ago the vet said it was clear he had an internal tumour, he had stopped eating and drinking and it was also effecting his legs even more so he kept falling off his perches and not able to support himself (we think that was the reason for his legs problem too but obviously it got worse over time). I'm so sad but have him here with me wrapped in a flannel and will be burying him in our special rose tree we have in memory of our dog, as he loved her (Tara - the dog). He looks so peaceful and I'm just glad I could take away his suffering, he was no longer tweeting or happy and I wasn't prepared to watch him get worse over time considering how much worse he had got in a week. I thought I should let you all know - and I want to say how much you helped me in all of your advice and support. Thank you, Becca x

Ohhh im so dreadfully sorry to hear this mintysowner. Its the internal ones that are the worse and from his little vid i could see from his tummy that was probably the problem. My Ted has a fatty tumour, these they can carry on with for some time quite happily.
You have done the right thing by him, its an awful thing to go though, ive had to have two pts with internal tumours.
He had a long and happy life with you. RIP sweet Minty, and a hug for you x

What a brave and thoughtful person you are. I'm sorry you had to lose your little fellow and friend. It shows how much you cared that you could end the hurt he was going through. Rest in Peace Minty. Goodnight little one.

Thanks so much for all of your kind replies <3 I hope this gets easier because it's awful him not being here already. He was the best companion to me as I'm unwell and spend a lot of time in bed, it just feels so empty here without him.
