Hi everyone,
This evening I noticed Milo had gone a bit quiet and wasn't wanting to be picked up etc. anyway he's just started throwing up his seeds - I've never seen a budgie do this so I was a bit confused at first but he's thrown up a lot - it's the seeds whole and it smells of rotten fish! :S I have no idea why he's just started throwing it back up - any ideas? He seems quiet too. He had a very small amount of brocolli yesterday but nothing else (which I removed after an hour). Should I be concerned?
Edited to add: He is moving his head back and fourth and then the seeds shoot out everywhere, but then some are also stuck to his mouth as well. And it stinks!

I would get him to an avian vet. It could be a crop infection.

What is a crop infection Starlingqueen? He's started eating again despite throwing most of what he ate earlier back up - should I stop him from eating until I can get a vet to look at him or let him carry on?

The crop is where the food goes before passing into the stomach. It sits just above the chest and below the throat. If you look at baby birds it's the bulge on the chest area. Don't let him eat any fruit or veg before seeing the vet.

How would he have got an infection? Poor Milo. Thanks - I'll ring first thing tomorrow x

There could be any cause. It could be the stress of the move to your house. It would be nothing you have done.

Do you think it could be the small bit of broccoli he had yesterday evening? I mean he literally had hardly any but... :/

No, that wouldn't cause an infection.

As starlingqueen has said, whatever is causing this, it is nothing you have done. Poor little Milo probably had been carrying this since he came from the breeders. When you first described this, what came to my mind was Canker, caused by the Trichomonas sp of protozoa. Trichomonas causes a fishy smell and vomiting, but there can be many other causes to vomiting. The best thing you can do is get Milo to an avian vet asap, in the meantime feed him only seed and millet, and keep him warm.

Thanks for the replies - I had been searching online and thought it sounded like canker, I read to treat this you need the anti b 'Ronidazole' but not sure it's available in the UK?? I had noticed he has been eating a lot, or at least sits at his feeding bowl for around 45 mins to an hour each time and also he kept swallowing funny so it does fit but I'll see what the vet says. Is this a common thing amongst birds? I wiped away the sick from his little face and gave him a good beak massage which he enjoyed, hope he will be ok.

Poor little Milo. Poor you. Hope the vet has answers. Milo is much too cute to be sick.

if it is Canker/tricho, there are treatments in the UK. An avian vet will know.

My budgie Elfie was sick like this (but with out the smell) i took him to the vet and it was a crop infection so they gave him 2 lots of medication which i had to give him over a week or 2 and it all cleared up...i would definitely take baby milo to the vets X

Can only echo what the others have said - once you have got him to the vet and a diagnosis has been made it may be worth letting the breeder know about it too
