I've read the stainless steel is supposed to be the best because it doesn't have zinc or lead in it. I guess that's why the cage manufacturers tend to use stainless steel bars in the cages. It is more expensive than galvanized mesh a/k/a hardware cloth.

Stainless steel is the Rolls Royce of bird metals, Steve. Unfortunately for most people birds, people tend to have a limited budget for their aviaries, so go for the galv steel instead. Which is okay, as long as you remember to do the vinegar scrub regularly. I think a lot of people know to do this in the beginning, but not that it needs to be done every 6 or 12 months or whatever. I am not really sure on the time frame, but I know it is not too often.

Would it not be a requirement to thoroughly clean stainless steel as it will gather dust and feather oils from the buds. I have noticed that where Whiskers grabs the bars with his beak there is a residue left. It is more readily seen on the mirrors and other shiny surfaces.

For me that would come under normal "housecleaning" and isn't necessarily a killer. Heavy metal poisoning is not nice, and particularly important if you have an aviary full of fine birds. We all know what budgies are like with their beaks.
SOURCES OF ZINC toxicity in birds
Galvanized wire aviaries Galvanized nails, mesh, washers Coins Staples Fertilizers Hardware cloth Some paints Containers Monopoly game pieces

Hi steve, as Hezz said stainless steal certainly is the Rolls Royce for the buds but VERY expensive . Im just completing the inside of a new aviary and using Galvanised wire, this has been left out loosely unrolled since September to allow the elements to work their magic, ive also given it 2 vinegar scrubs and it has dulled down nicely. My previous Aviary was all galvanised wire and during the 12 years i had it i never had a problem with a bird getting metal poisoning. I guess there is always a risk but i will clean the wire twice a year with a vinegar wash. Hope this helps.

I've read that there is an inexpensive Rustoleum brand appliance spray epoxy that can be sprayed on the inexpensive galvanized mesh which dries to a safe hardened finish. I think that's what we've settled on doing.
