I'm just back from the vet with Coconut. I noticed her nostrils seemed to be closing over and she's gasping for breath after flying. So to be safe off we went ... They seem to think they're inflamed so gave Metacam and vitamin A supplement, and back Thursday for a check. I seem to remember though, a while ago, was it starrymist who had nostril problems with Brodie and he got diagnosed some plasma infection and got some menthol sauna thing? If starrymist sees this thread could you let me know please how they tested and diagnosed him? I wonder if I should mention this when I go back on Thursday? Just incase.

Hi lemonade, yes it was Brodie. The vet said she thought he had a micro plasma sinus infection. She didn't do a specific test for it though she was fairly sure it was that. He had metacam & another med, 1 was liquid & 1 was a crushed up pill (I'm not sure which one was the metacam?) And she recommended inhalant sessions. We'd put 1/2 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of boiling water, outside the cage then wrapped the cage & bowl under his nighttime cover to create a hot steamy atmosphere. The 1st time he only lasted a few mins as when I looked he was panting & looked boiling but he soon got used to it. Initially it also made him make that 'clicking' sound, I guess his tubes were clearing or something. We did it for 15-30mins 3 times a day & very soon he adored it, so chirpy & I'd get a reproachful look for spoiling the fun when I uncovered him! We were told these kinds of bugs can be hard to shift so he was on treatment for a month & had the sauna sessions for around 6weeks even though he was much improved just to make sure it was gone & it did work. It's a bit of a faff doing the inhalants but we got into a routine with it. His nostril was completely covered over but just the one. Hope coconut gets well soon. How's Kiwi? I'm not around a huge amount just how so sorry if I've missed something

Thank you so much starrymist. That info is great. I think I might mention this to the vet on Thursday. It won't hurt eh. I've no idea how this came about, I thought she might have a wee cold but they said no to that. I hope they can fix it. I've just given her Metacam. Poor girl Kiwi is good. He's had a hellish moult and looks like a proper scruff. But he will be a handsome man one all his new feathers come in. He lost his tail feathers so currently looks like he has a stump.

I hope little Coconut will be ok lemonade. I hope you don't need to use the steam bath treatment, but it wouldn't do any harm to ask the vet.

Sorry to hear that little Coconut is a bit poorly. Hope the meds help. It will be interesting to see what your vet thinks about the inhalant idea.

Hopefully the vet will be open to suggestions. You can feel like a real dumb-nut when they shoot you down in flames, but on the other side of that, the humidifier treatment can't do any harm, if you did decide to give it a go, anyway.

It wasn't a good start to the morning. She had a very quiet night but once the covers came off I seen her cere was all wet and she was constantly bobbing her head. Like regurgitating but not. And doing big repetitive yawns. I was worried she was feeling very uncomfortable and went to work feeling unsettled. I sent husband home at lunch as he works local to home and he said she looked a bit better. I did get my vet to give me a ring for some advice and reassurance.he said it would do no harm to try the hot water in a bowl thing. I got home and the little poppet was just sat there all sleepy and puffed, but I gave her medicine and about half an hour ago she seemed to perk up and is now playing with the basketball and chewing perches.
One thing I noticed recently was that she was chewing far too much and I worried she had eaten something bad which has made her feel unwell and somehow affected her nostril problem. I think it's separate though but I did take the playgym away as I think she was actually eating bits of wood rather than chewing, and I noticed the mat I keep their toys on had pulled out bits of threads. Rope perches were also removed quite a while ago as I seen her pulling the fibres out :/

Hopefully the meds will work and inhaling. Perhaps it's the wood too which is good now you have removed it and the mat.

Poor Coconut, I hope maybe after her medicine, and if you do the hot steam, she might starts to feel a bit better lemonade. Lots of love from me and mine x

Good luck with her, lemonade. I hope she hasn't been a silly girl and gotten some fibres caught somewhere they shouldn't be.

I'm still catching up on a few weeks of threads. I might've missed a coconut update. Is she okay and responding to meds now lemonade ?

Hi Jenny, thanks for asking about my little chicken today is her last day of her meds. She seems to be doing a lot better. She went for a review last Tuesday and her cere had grown a skin almost covering her whole beak, my vet scraped and peeled it all away and she seemed to get instant relief! her nostrils are still tiny, but I am happy with her progress. She is wanting to play and bite again which is a good sign!
